I highly recommend this book to any health care provider who wants ...

In a world where patient satisfaction (Press-Ganey results) determines profit, health care providers would be foolish to ignore the invaluable information Dr Epstein provides. As a nursing professor, I am recommending this book to all of my students. Dr. Epstein provides very practical tips that practitioners can use with patients that will improve the care they provide, thus improving both patient outcomes as well as patient satisfaction. In addition, his focus on self-reflection is pivotal to minimizing compassion fatigue in a world where physician burn out is at an all time high. I highly recommend this book to any health care provider who wants to improve his/her practice, build resilience, and become a better practitioner to the patients we care for.

Mindfulness applied to doctors and medicine, to help them listen to their patient and trying to be, sometimes, more "human", because being a doctor is hard and takes a toll on everybody who is a professional. I would recommend this book to all my friends who are doctors or studying to become one, and even to my psychologist and psychotherapist friend.

This is a very helpful and well written text on teaching. The authors' progressive and enlightened approach (it's all about the student taking charge of his/her own learning, especially in group work) is provocative and layed out in detail.

The central theme of this graduate-level number theory textbook is the solution of Diophantine equations, i.e., equations or systems of polynomial equations which must be solved in integers, rational numbers or more generally in algebraic numbers. This theme, in particular, is the central motivation for the modern theory of arithmetic algebraic geometry. In this text, this is considered through three aspects.

The first is the local aspect: one can do analysis in p-adic fields, and here the author starts by looking at solutions in finite fields, then proceeds to lift these solutions to local solutions using Hensel lifting. The second is the global aspect: the use of number fields, and in particular of class groups and unit groups. This classical subject is here illustrated through a wide range of examples. The third aspect deals with specific classes of equations, and in particular the general and Diophantine study of elliptic curves, including 2 and 3-descent and the Heegner point method. These subjects form the first two parts, forming Volume I.

The study of Bernoulli numbers, the gamma function, and zeta and L-functions, and of p-adic analogues is treated at length in the third part of the book, including many interesting and original applications.

Much more sophisticated techniques have been brought to bear on the subject of Diophantine equations, and for this reason, the author has included five chapters on these techniques forming the fourth part, which together with the third part forms Volume II. These chapters were written by Yann Bugeaud, Guillaume Hanrot, Maurice Mignotte, Sylvain Duquesne, Samir Siksek, and the author, and contain material on the use of Galois representations, points on higher-genus curves, the superfermat equation, Mihailescu's proof of Catalan's Conjecture, and applications of linear forms in logarithms.

The book contains 530 exercises of varying difficulty from immediate consequences of the main text to research problems, and contain many important additional results.

Ian Cunningham is Chair of Strategic Developments International Limited and the Centre for Self Managed Learning Limited. He is also on the Adjunct Faculty of the Fielding Institute in California and a Visiting Professor at Middlesex University. Ian works with organizations worldwide in areas such as team and people development, and large scale organizational change.

Places learning in the centre of business strategy

The two core themes in this book are:
learning as a strategic process for both the individual and the organisation, and
an approach that the author calls Self Managed Learning (SML) and distinguishes in great detail from other approaches to teaching and learning, while recognising similarities and overlaps.
The author makes a lot of use of 'I'. He insists that the views expressed are his own - and some of them are distinctly idiosyncratic. This adds to, rather than detracting from the quality of the book, because he also discusses other views in considerable detail. This helps to make the distinction between his prescription and those of others, in a field in which the terminology is decidedly 'muddy'. As an example, 'action learning' can be used to refer to anywhere up to half a dozen distinct training/learning approaches.
Right at the heart of his concern is learning how to learn. The specific program content of a program of learning and the techniques of learning employed are means to the end of becoming a skilled learner both as an individual and in relationship with others. What distinguishes his prescription is a consistent focus not simply on how well people learn marketing, quality management or whatever but on how the strategy and processes of learning combine to meet both immediate learning goals and improve learning capacity. He is primarily concerned with what is variously described as second order learning, 'reframing' or 'metalearning'.
Everyone engaged in organisational change and, in particular, in the difficult shift from a bureaucratic mind-set will find a great deal to think about. They will also encounter both challenges and useful ideas and tools.
For those who have read the first edition, the second edition adds a chapter on the learner in context, and has maintained and improved the sideline headings throughout the book. Other changes are relatively minor and certainly do not change the thrust of the argument.

Hard to find your way around, however this is an essential book

The second edition of this book could really use some additional indexing.

This book is not a dictionary per se - it does not purport to be one - so usually the process begins by finding a Hebrew verb in a separate dictionary. The three dictionaries that I use present you with with the INFINITIVE of the verb, or FIRST PERSON MASCULINE, none gives you the ROOT. Unfortunately, there is no index in this book of infinitive or first person masculine forms of verbs. Indexing is by the ROOT only in Hebrew.

In the English index, the sequence is very confusing. The page sequence is from right to left in accordance with Hebrew script, but the columns on each page run from left to right.

As a result it is difficult to identify the verb you want to research. Usually it requires back-tracking to the closest English word, and then scouring through the conjugation pages of possible candidates for the infinitive or first person form of the verb.

However, once you actually identify the verb, the information is exceptional. All tenses and constructs are included. I would say that despite its shortcomings, this book is essential to students of Hebrew.

Essential for Hebrew language students

Oh, boy.

Israelis can be unapologetically in depth on subjects, and that leads to in depth exploration and lots of debate.

This book didn't happen by accident. It is a wonderful in depth exploration of verbs for intermediate students. It is dense and an essential reference that should go hand in hand with a Hebrew-English dictionary. Considering how complex the subject matter, it is astounding in its layout, and valuable in its accessibility.

I cannot recommend this book enough for its value to Hebrew language students who have advanced to their second year of study. Wonderful.
