With a complete, approachable presentation, CRITICAL THINKING: THE ART OF ARGUMENT is an accessible yet rigorous introduction to critical thinking. The text emphasizes immediate application of critical-thinking skills to real life. The relevance of these skills is shown throughout the text by highlighting the advantages of basing one's decisions on a thoughtful understanding of arguments and presenting the overarching commonalities across arguments. With its conversational writing style and carefully selected examples, the book employs a consistent and unified treatment of logical form and an innovative semiformal method of standardizing arguments that illustrates the concept of logical form while maintaining a visible connection to ordinary speech. Without sacrificing accuracy or detail, the authors have clearly presented the material with appropriate study tools and exercises that emphasize application rather than memorization.

Review
"It is a wonderfully written text that combines advantages of two standard approaches--it is both accessible and rigorous."- Nenad Popovic, Southern Methodist University
"A solid treatment of the relevant topics, well designed to develop the reader's reasoning skills. Students will find it both engaging and challenging."- Steve Hiltz, Southern Methodist University
"The book is a rigorous and comprehensive introduction to critical thinking and elementary logic, with helpful chapters on statistical, analogical, causal and moral argument. Its breadth is impressive. It's the most comprehensive critical thinking text I know of."- Hugh Wilder, The College of Charleston
"This is a text that is both student friendly and teacher friendly; for teachers it provides reference materials with appropriate depth and breadth, and for students it provides an unpretentious approach to a subject that is often perceived as complex and addresses student concern that critical thinking is a 'pointless' subject."- Michelle Darnell, Fayetteville State University

This Book and Electronic Course Package is a Disaster
By Philo
I am a philosophy professor and have taught a critical thinking course with this book. I've also used an accompanying electronic course program called Aplia by Cengage in which students can do their homework online. This book and aplia package is a nightmare and utter disaster. Over half my students had problems accessing aplia. My email was constantly flooded day in and day out with students telling me that something or the other wasn't working for them on aplia. I've spent many hours at night trying to address these problems. There are no page numbers on the e-book, so you can't reference the e-book with the physical text. The e-book has section numbers, but the section numbers aren't in the physical book. Homework comes in sets that cover a large section of the book. Teachers cannot themselves break up the set of questions as being due on different days. The large set of questions must be due only on the same day no matter even if you haven't taught the corresponding material yet. The directions for linking aplia to blackboard are completely unclear. I had to call their tech service, and the instructions they gave me were different from the ones on their power point directions. What they call their "instructions" to students for registering for aplia were not real substantive instructions at all. They simply tell students to ask your teacher. This is highly problematic for teachers who are new to aplia and aren't familiar with student registration. Students who buy the e-book package on the Cengage webpage won't be allowed into aplia for some strange reason. If students register for aplia on Cengage's website, then they can't access aplia.
The above is all rather bizarre, horrific, and almost at the same time comical problems with this book and aplia package. I love teaching philosophy, but the most stress I have ever had in my years of teaching philosophy have come from using this book. Do not be a victim, and don't lose your head and sanity over this very illogically structured logic book/course package. Save yourself the pain and unneeded stress. Get your logic text and online course program from somewhere else. No need to lose sleep at night.

good.
By Susan
i was required to order this book for my philosophy 1010 class. the majority of the book is incredibly unhelpful with the exception of the "how to" summaries at the end of the chapter/sections. the book is okay at explaining concepts but for the most part there is just a lot of examples that are confusing.

Awesome book!
By Matthew Walcott
Good book for explaining a little more in depth when the teacher skims over the material. Came in new packaging like the company stated also.
