What can I say, this is the series of all series far better then even fifty shades,I am so sad I have to wait for another book to be written ......if you liked fifty shades you will like this even more ,if there were more stars I would give it a ten

Not what I expected

Had read the storyline for this book so many times and couldn't wait till I could read them all. Was yeah when I found out that all the books was published. Started reading, and the beginning was very intriguing, exiting and dark. But then the book took a turn, and was then just a regular romance story was me. I did read all three books, but have no intention to read the fourth book, that I later found out, will be published somewhat later.

With that said, the story was still good, exiting and with twists and turns.

Good portrait of a Sol LeWitt wall drawing exhibition.

This a a good overview of an exhibition of Sol LeWitt wall drawings presented in Italy. The reproductions are reasonable for a book this price, but the "instructions" and "advice to draftsmen" for the drawings is not included. This would have made the book far more valuable as a reference for Sol LeWitt's work.

About the Author
Arthur J. Keown is the R. B. Pamplin Professor of Finance at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He received his bachelor’s degree from Ohio Wesleyan University, his MBA from the University of Michigan, and his doctorate from Indiana University. An award-winning teacher, he is a member of the Academy of Teaching Excellence at Virginia Tech, he has received five Certificates of Teaching Excellence, the W. E. Wine Award for Teaching Excellence, and the Alumni Teaching Excellence Award, and in 1999 he received the Outstanding Faculty Award from the State of Virginia. Professor Keown is widely published in academic journals. His work has appeared in Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Journal of Financial Research, Journal of Banking and Finance, Financial Management, Journal of Portfolio Management, and many others. Two of his books are widely used in college finance classes all over the country – Financial Management and Foundations of Finance: The Logic and Practice of Financial Management. Professor Keown is a Fellow of Decision Sciences Institute and served as Department Head for twelve years. In addition, he has served as the co-editor of both the Journal of Financial Research and the Financial Management Association’s Survey and Synthesis Series. He was recently inducted into Ohio Wesleyan’s Athletic Hall of Fame for wrestling. His daughter and son are both married and live in Madison, Wisconsin, and Denver, Colorado, while he and his wife live in Blacksburg, Virginia, where he collects original art from Mad magazine.

Superb text on a vital topic- basics everyone should know

Personally, I think that we would all be better off if we spent more time in our education process teaching people about the realities of their economic lives. This is especially true of their choice of careers, managing those resources, and preparing for their "golden years". I could nominate a few topics I think we could cease teaching in order to have room for the necessary classes to provide people with real life financial management skills that can have a direct impact on the improvement of all aspects of their lives.

This book, "Personal Finance - Turning Money into Wealth" is a fantastic tool for students and ANY interested reader. I wish everyone would work through this book (or one very much like it). While it is never too late to develop these skills, the younger a person gets a plan for their economic life in place, the more power it has and the better off they will be long term.

I like the way Prof. Keown emphasizes basic principles (he has 15 of them) and planning. He begins the book by providing the foundation of financial planning, teaching the student how to measure their financial health and using that to inform their plan, understanding the Time Value of Money (a topic so vital that no one should graduate high school without knowing, in my opinion), and the basics of tax planning.

The author then provides some great information on managing money by understanding the realities of cash and liquid assets, credit cards (open credit) and the traps it represents, using consumer loans in PLANNED BORROWING (another important topic that is almost unknown to most consumers because of the misuse of open credit), and buying homes and automobiles.

I really enjoyed his next discussion on insurance. He talks about the various kinds of insurance, the kinds of protection they provide at what costs, and especially the situations in which buying insurance makes sense and when it does not.

The section on managing investments is good, solid, but BASIC information. Anyone doing anything beyond a few basic retirement plans will need to study other materials. This section is the one where I have a tiny quibble with the author. He differentiates investing and speculation by saying that investing involves putting money in assets that provide returns - stocks, bonds, etc - but that speculating is putting money in things like baseball cards that only have a price based on what others are willing to pay. I sort of understand what I think he is trying to say.

However, all investing is in some sense speculating. The buyer and seller have different views of the future (speculating about the future) and so they make opposite choices at a certain price. Either of them would change their view, presumably, at some other price. Stocks do not have a built in return and many do not pay dividends and too often nowadays their residual value is zero. Too often people buy stocks simply because they are going up (the greater fool theory) and get badly burned as we saw in the Internet Bubble collapse in early 2000. In any case, the caution the author advocates is sufficient and sound. I am just concerned that others use the terms "investment" and "speculation" differently than the author and might confuse those trying to enter the fray for the first time.

This fine text ends with a discussion of life cycle issues such as retirement planning, estate planning, and how all the pieces studied fit together into the grand plan.

The author also provides online helps such as problems, quizzes, and especially many useful spreadsheets that the student can not only use, but study to help them build their own that will be tailored to the student's specific situation. There is also a workbook with the basics of using a financial calculator and the worksheets called for in the text.

This is a superb text on a vital topic. Strongly Recommended for general readers as well as students in a class on this subject (which EVERY college student should be REQUIRED to take - or pass out of by test).

I don't generally keep textbooks but this is one that I will hold onto for quite some time. This book has been completely worth it and I keep referring back to it as I have been out of college.

No Access Card was Included

I love my Pearson Personal Finance book! This book explains everything from ratios to tricks with your taxes using easy to understand explanations and fun corrolations to well-known tv shows. It is everything and more than I had hoped for upon purchasing it. When I bought it, though, it said that it included the access card for the MyFinanceLab and eText online. I never received the card and had to purchase, again, the MyFinanceLab seperately at $55. This book had already cost me almost $200 which was supposed to include the MyFinanceLab, but it wound up costing me a lot more. I would give the book alone 5 stars, however the unincluded MyFinanceLab brings that score down. Make sure before purchasing this, the access card is indeed included when you buy the Personal Finance and MyFinanceLab package.

In this book based on his Pulitzer Prize-winning series of articles for the Philadelphia Inquirer , journalist Weiner probes the way the Pentagon has used secret budgets to fund huge military programs. This has grown to the point that there are now more than 100 multimillion- and multibillion-dollar weapons systems, many of them nuclear weapons designed to fight and win World Wars III and IV, built without the awareness of the public or even the Congress. Weiner takes a close look at programs such as the Stealth bomber and provides fascinating detail from Congressional testimony. The thesis of the book--that secrecy in government military programs is antithetical to democracy--is well documented and hugely important. As the Cold War draws to a close and military budgets come under attack, the public and Congress may tend to forget the defense establishment's inclination toward secrecy and self-perpetuation. Weiner's book serves as a timely reminder that this would be unwise. Highly recommended.

About the Author
Tim Weiner is the author of five books. "Legacy of Ashes", his history of the CIA, won the National Book Award. His journalism on secret government programs received the Pulitzer Prize for national reporting. As a correspondent for The New York Times, he covered war and terrorism in Afghanistan, Pakistan, the Sudan, and other nations. He directs the Carey Institute's nonfiction residency program in upstate New York and teaches as an Anschutz Distinguished Fellow in American Studies at Princeton.

Shameful facts of secret spending of the Pentagon.

This excellent book should be read by every USA taxpayer, civilian and military. Mr. Weiner, with an excellent bibliography, tells it like it is. Without barriers, he gives historical, verifiable--if you desire--facts on the irresposible mechanisms used by USA presidents to advance an empire through the throats of many countries--beginning with the USA itself, and justify murders, lies, frauds, thefts, violations of the USA Constitution, through the military and paramilitar civil agencies such as the CIA, based on the very doubtful and euphemistic principle that almost anything is a threat to USA national security. Excellent book. Written almost 20 years ago it is as updated as if it had been written yesterday.

Money talks! And does it have a story to tell!

Blank Check is a meticulously researched and chilling account of how the Cold War led the nation into a frenzy of spending based on fear and propaganda. The book spans 40 years of government development and National crises from the viewpoint of a checkbook. However, the fact that the book was published before the fall of the Soviet Union means that, to a modern reader, the stories told are a frightening look at times gone by rather than a relevant commentary on modern life. Also, with no central character to latch onto the book, while conscience stirring, is not necessarily compelling. That said, revelations in this book about the government's outright violation of the constitution in the name of National Security still have the ability to leave a reader appalled.

Relevant to Modern DoD Ethics Issues Including Private Contractors

Fantastic book and interesting how useful reading an "older" investigation of the defense department black budget and associated misappropriations/abuses can be in easily tying the very same ethical/strategic defense issues to the more recent "Spies for Hire" by Tim Shorrock (also a fantastic read).

The similarities regarding decades long ethical issues with regard to the lack of oversight within black budget is almost overwhelming while simultaneously intriguing and disheartening: no concrete evidence, whatsoever, that Congressional or other government oversight of black budget operations or DoD contracting, in general, has improved. In fact, following 9/11 the situation, if anything, financial and ethical accountability has actually degraded.

This timeless, still-compelling book provides that much-needed historical perspective yet also begs the question: over the next 10 or 20 years is there any reason to believe money will be spent, appropriately, to truly and measurable advance US National Security with concrete accountability for those instances where projects and leaders fail to act responsibly...at great expense to the American taxpayers actually undermining US defense and war fighter readiness?

Really wanted to like this book

I really wanted to like this book (the writing is great) but feel there is an air of condescension and old-school colonial patronization in Theroux's descriptions and interactions on his travels. Surprising that he is American although he lived (lives?) in Britain at the time of writing. The most hilarious and ironic part was his sneering dismissal of Singapore's vision of creating a "wired city" way back in 1974. I love trains and I'm really glad that I was able to experience some of the same travels he did but frankly his air of intellectual and cultural superiority over the natives is irritating and narrow-minded at times. As a travel writer I think Pico Iyer has better sensibilities.

A Great "First" Travel Book by a Great Writer.

He was 31 and married with two small children, living in a small house in London. He had no "job" as such but he had multiple narrative and pedagogical skills. He was French Canadian, a native of New England, a product of its best Universities. He had been a teacher of English with the Peace Corps in Malawi and Uganda for four years and, with other sponsors. for two years in Singapore. He was now (in 1972) a "writer" of sorts and had always loved trains. So in the late summer of that year he set out to cross Asia and back by train - alone.

After four months "on the road" - mainly by rail - he returned, rejoined his family and two years later published his first travel book -The Great Railway Bazaar. It was an instant success; and in the ensuing 40 odd years Paul Theroux novelist, teacher, man of letters and social critic has not only become the dean of travel writers with more than 10 books on travel to his credit but an established novelist, essayist and short story writer as well a published author of more than 35 books of non-travel books in his name.

I read Bazaar when it was first published and became a Theroux fan on the spot; and since then I have read and cheered every one of its "issue"; but I have never written any comments on Bazaar. However, having just finished his last and perhaps his final travel book (The Last Train From Zona Verde,) I think it's time to say something about Bazaar which I have read again for this purpose.

Bazaar starts from London in 1972 with a rail trip to Paris where Theroux boards the "Direct-Orient-Express" which is not to be confused with Agatha Christy's or Alfred Hitchcock's luxury train. There's only one sleeping car for Istanbul via Milan, Venice and Belgrade. And you wouldn't want any of your family to have to travel on it. There's no dining car. You are pretty much on your own for a couple of days, But Istanbul is, as always, engaging. Then it's the "Express" across Turkey to the border of Iran, another "Express" to Teheran, a flight to Peshawar and then the Khyber Pass Local and the Frontier Mail to Mumbai (then Bombay), Indian trains of the mid 1970s too numerous to mention here - Bombay, Simla, New Delhi, Calcutta. A train to Ceylon (before it was Sri Lanka). A flight to Burma (when it was still Burma). Then The Mandalay express. Up country through Vietnam (where the war was still winding down) . A flight to Japan. Tokyo. Kyoto. The fast Japanese trains. And then - by contrast - a voyage ("storm tossed" is the proper phrase for it) to the Eastern Terminus of the Trans Siberian "Express" in the USSR and ten days across Siberia in late December. (Can you imagine ten days on a train in a small compartment with another occupant and never a bath? You really have to love trains!) And, finally, three days after Christmas he's home

It was a time when travel in most of the countries he visited was for the hardy and adventurous. There was no internet, no GPS,
no email, no iPhone. You used the telegraph system such as it was to communicate with home. Credit cards were generally a thing of the future so you carried your money in a money belt and used bank drafts (when available) for your cash. The modern preventatives or analgesics for Delhi Belly, its children and cousins, were in the future. And personal cleanliness while traveling was obviously a luxury if it could be accommodated at all.

Curiously Theroux has never to my memory commented on any of these things. Yes, I have read in some of his books where he has been ill, but we never read of the ordinary vicissitudes of travel -- problems which the rest of us have when we just go to New York. Nor do we nor have we read about his travel plans. Is it all catch-as-catch-can? What was the preparation for the trip? (Obviously there was and had been some preparation because he frequently writes about giving lectures or teaching, and there needs to be some advance work for this.) And where does he find all the books he talks about reading as he goes? They're great books for the time but none that I would expect to find in your corner book store.

Now back to Bazaar . As I said I was hooked the first time I read it. And this time it was even better because using Google Earth and Google Maps one can get a pretty good picture of where he is, how he was traveling and what he was seeing. So this is Theroux in his first book, already at the top of his game and a book to spend an evening of two with now in 2013 just as it was when I read in forty years ago. And I guarantee you will like it too

I first read "The Great Railway Bazaar" twenty years ago. During this warm and lazy summer (2015) I have spent considerable time reading books from my shelves I had not read ("The Aeneid", "Europe: A History"), books new to me ("Flight of Passage", "The Oregon Trail: A New American Adventure"), including many travel writings ("A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush", "Slowly Down the Ganges"). Resisting the urge to jump in my car and indulge my wanderlust, I also decided to reread some of Paul Theroux's vast corpus which is to my mind the next best thing. Actually, in the case of "The Great Railway Bazaar" and its companion "Ghost Train to the Eastern Star" this may be the best option, far better than what sounds like a tedious and tiring undertaking.

Theroux is a skilled and engaging writer with a gift for vivid description and memorable characterization. The first named volume records a rail journey made in the 1970s when the writer was 33; the latter revisits much the same route in the first decade of the 21st century, thirty-three years after the first. Certain changes in itinerary were forced upon him (Iran was no longer open to him, some parts of Vietnam, originally closed, were now easily accessible) but the general shape of his journeys remained the same.

Essentially his route takes him from London to Istanbul then overland to India, across Southeast Asia, to Japan and return through Siberia to Moscow (seven days on the train), then home. If you have considered traveling to these parts then read this (these) book(s). You may be encouraged by what the author reveals. You may be (as I was) somewhat discouraged by the labor of the journey and be satisfied by simply learning of another's ordeals. In either case the tales told will reward your efforts and perhaps satisfy your longing for adventure.
