Proscriptive without being restrictive
By Bunyyup
In "Analysis without Paralysis," Bensoussan and Fleisher present an even dozen methods for conducting analysis for businesses that lead to results and not to endless "paralysis by analysis."

I really liked this book! It was well written and is a great resource if you are working in the consumer products world. I came at this as a general process analyst, operations research type guy.

The book is very well written and edited. The style is conversational. You could imagine being in an interactive meeting with Bensoussan and Fleisher as you read the book.

The first two chapters describe the role of analysis in business and the generic analysis process respectively. At first blush, I was not keen on the generic chapters, but it did provide a framework for the reader to compare the dozen in-depth analysis techniques described in the rest of the book.

Each analysis technique chapter begins with a description and purpose section that quickly tells you if this is a technique that you want to invest more time reading about or trying to apply. Then, the chapter goes through a more or less detailed description of the process and products associated with the technique. Each chapter concludes with Endnotes for further reading, and that was very helpful.

One caveat is in order, this book is exactly what it claims to be, a business resource. If you work in the social world or non-profit sector, many of the techniques will still be useful, but you will have to do some significant translation. That is not a bad thing, but it is an important point from an expectation standpoint.

The authors also did not treat all analysis techniques as being equal. They spent considerably more pages on Growth/Share Portfolio analysis, Five Forces Analysis, and Financial Statement analysis than the other areas. Growth/Share can be applied to the non-profit sector in an abstract way as can Five Forces Analysis. Financial Statement analysis is not so helpful if you are using societal good or utility as your drivers rather than dollars and cents.

Product Lifecycle analysis was presented in a survey form, and you have to stretch a bit to use it in a service industry. It is even more of an abstraction if you want to use these techniques in a non-profit setting.

Some of the more useful techniques for the government and non-profit worlds, e.g., SWOT analysis, were more survey chapters than detailed looks.

All in all, this is a good book for any manager responsible for process development or execution, and it is a great book if you work in the consumer products world.

Great intermediate level resource for strategic analysis in business
By Todd I. Stark
I found this a very good intermediate level book on strategic analysis for business. The tools are well chosen and diverse, the format explains the use and rationale of each tool very well, and the examples are contemporary, relevant, interesting, and relatively easy to follow. This is intermediate level because it does require some general understanding of markets, business processes, and analytic techniques, but the techniques and the level of explanation in this book are still suitable to people who are not professional analysts. That is, I think any experienced upper level manager should be able to pick up this book and understand and begin to use at least most of these techniques in their own business with a little study and effort even if they have never used them before.

This book also stands out among business books in providing a brief but solid grounding in the origin and theory of each technique, followup reading, and both the strengths and teh weaknesses of each technique, rather than just presenting examples and case studies. I think this book is a great resource for any reflective business strategist. The biggest caveat I would raise about this book is that it is focused very specifically on general business strategy, that is, navigating markets and finding better ways to allocate resources across business units in order to be more profitable. It would be difficult to apply most of this information to other kinds of analysis or strategy.

Best primer on Business Analysis tools without having an MBA
By Amazon Customer
Great book to learn a diverse set of tools for business. The authors took a pretty boring, academic and hard to grasp subject and made it enjoyable. Complex models, such as BGC Portfolio Matrix and Porter's Five Forces Industry Analysis, are clearly explained. The strengths and weaknesses of each tool are explained, along with a method of how to complete the tool. Each tool was well illustrated and contained a case study to see a practical application of the tool.

I found the strongest chapters were on Financial Statement Analysis, SWOT, and Win/Loss Analysis. Even if you don't have to do much analysis for your business you need to know how to read financial statements. SWOT and Win/Loss analysis are needed for everyone - and this book avoids the superficial treatment and use of those tools. The book points out for example that SWOT analysis s supposed to flesh out strategic opportunities in contrast to the organizational capabilities - not be a "why they should buy from us" spin tool as it is usually used for.

The book has a large gap - how to research and quantify much of the data needed to do analytical work. Some tools, for example, you have to develop and rank various criteria. This book offers no quantifiable method for doing that ranking - making the results subjective and arbitrary, the very things analysis is supposed to eliminate or at least minimize. Understandably this book isn't about research methods but without explaining how to get good inputs none of theses tools will be effective. Most tools require accurate and in-depth information on markets and competitors. How do you get that data? Other tools require establishing various outcomes and criteria to be studied. How is that done in a way that doesn't lend itself to the analyst's biases or spin? You won't find those answers here. To perform a credible analysis you will need to get a better resource that fleshes out the method and gives you empirical methods of developing, sorting, and ranking input data.

That said, I haven't found a better book that puts together a wide assortment of business analytical tools and explains them sufficiently to know when and where to use each. With a companion book on how to do competitive/market research, this will be an invaluable and often used resource on my bookshelf.

Gay Novels of Britain, Ireland and the Commonwealth, 1881-1981: A Reader's Guide, by Drewey Wayne Gunn

A Library Journal Best Reference

While American gay fiction has received considerable scholarly attention, little has been given to developments in other English-speaking countries. This survey catalogs 254 novels and novellas by some 173 British, Irish and Commonwealth authors in which gay and bisexual male characters play a major role. Arranged chronologically from the appearance of the first gay protagonist in 1881, to works from the onset of the AIDS epidemic in 1981, in-depth entries discuss each book's publication history, plot and significance for the construct of gay identity, along with a brief biography of its author. Including iconic works like Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray (1890) and E.M. Forster's Maurice, as well as lesser known but noteworthy novels such as Rose Macaulay's The Lee Shore (1912) and John Broderick's The Waking of Willie Ryan (1969), this volume--the first of its kind--enlarges our understanding of the development of gay fiction and provides an essential reading list.

Why Men Don't Listen and Women Can't Read Maps: How We're Different and What to Do About It, by Allan Pease, Barbara Pease

Have you ever wished your partner came with an instruction booklet? This international bestseller is the answer to all the things you've ever wondered about the opposite sex.

For their controversial new book on the differences between the way men and women think and communicate, Barbara and Allan Pease spent three years traveling around the world, collecting the dramatic findings of new research on the brain, investigating evolutionary biology, analyzing psychologists, studying social changes, and annoying the locals.

The result is a sometimes shocking, always illuminating, and frequently hilarious look at where the battle line is drawn between the sexes, why it was drawn, and how to cross it. Read this book and understand--at last!--why men never listen, why women can't read maps, and why learning each other's secrets means you'll never have to say sorry again.

Amazon.com Review
Ever wonder why women can brush their teeth while walking and talking on various subjects while men generally find this very difficult to do? Why 99 percent of all patents are registered by men? Why stressed women talk? Why so many husbands hate shopping? According to Barbara and Allan Pease, science now confirms that "the way our brains are wired and the hormones pulsing through our bodies are the two factors that largely dictate, long before we are born, how we will think and behave. Our instincts are simply our genes determining how our bodies will behave in given sets of circumstances." That's right: socialization, politics, or upbringing aside, men and women have profound brain differences and are intrinsically inclined to act in distinct--and consequently frustrating--ways.

The premises behind Why Men Don't Listen and Women Can't Read Maps is that all too often, these differences get in the way of fulfilling relationships and that understanding our basic urges can lead to greater self-awareness and improved relations between the sexes. The Peases spent three years researching their book--traveling the globe, talking to experts, and studying the cutting-edge research of ethnologists, psychologists, biologists, and neuroscientists--yet their work does not read a bit like "hard science." In fact, the authors go to considerable lengths to point out that their book is intended to be funny, interesting, and easy to read; in short, this is a book whose primary purpose is to talk about "average men and women, that is, how most men and women behave most of the time, in most situations, and for most of the past."

Why Men Don't Listen, therefore, deals largely in generalizations, and this is bound to alienate some readers. "We don't beat around the bush with suppositions or politically correct clichs," the Peases claim. Those up for an irreverent and unapologetic take on why men and women just can't help themselves sometimes may just decide to read on. --Svenja Soldovieri

From Publishers Weekly
"To get a man to listen, give him advance notice and provide an agenda," write the husband and wife Peases in this pithy, attention-grabbing guidebook to the differences between men and women. Originally self-published in Australia to wide acclaim, the book weaves together facts from the latest brain research, theories from evolutionary biology and a treasure trove of anecdotal events and conversations collected by the authors during a three-year research trip around the world. Sociobiology has rarely been so entertaining. The Peases say that a woman's brain is wired to be able to speak and listen simultaneously, for example, and they are geared to talk through problems. Men, by contrast, need to clam up. "He uses his right brain to try to solve his problems or find solutions, and he stops using his left brain to listen or speak." These brain differences took shape in cave days, according to the authors. Men were hunters and defenders who evolved tunnel vision (as compared to women's vision), while, as nurturers, women not only had broad peripheral vision but sensitive relationship skills. Channel surfing and newspaper skimming are modern ways for a man to cut off from others to privately mull problems, advise the authors. "Remember, his forefathers spent more than a million years sitting expressionless on a rock surveying the horizon, so this comes naturally to him.... " Feisty and crystal clear, this controversial work will appeal to readers of both sexes. (May)

From Library Journal
Someday, there may be a book based on evolutionary psychology that lightheartedly attempts to explain the differences between men and women; this isn't it. Barbara, CEO of Pease Training International, which produces videos and seminars for businesses and governments, and Allan, a professional speaker, assert that the "politically correct" will lambaste their work, which is based on interviews with experts and seminars. Quite rightly so. While there is a need to publicize research on the evolutionary differences between men and women, there is absolutely no need to couch the research in offensive stereotypes while trying to be funny. For example, the authors use the tired clich? of a woman with PMS hurling cookware at her spouse to illustrate that testosterone equals spatial ability. They also allege that a "woman with a moustache is...much more likely to make a better engineer than one who looks like a Barbie doll." In addition, quite a few of the statistics are suspectAe.g., the authors allege that 110 percent of engineers are men. Public libraries should stick with Deborah Tannen's work and John Gray's Mars/Venus series.APam Matthews, Gettysburg Coll. Lib., PA

Irreverant and insightful. And fun.
By Ken Wells
This book was refreshingly 'politically incorrect' with gender generalizations. The combination if their own 'toungue and cheek' narrative AND some emerging science of the brains was a real page turner.

The greatest reward was learning some things about how the brains work and why we look 'stupid' to each other by accident. However, the man's language part of thr brain and mind, simply isn't capable of keeping up with two people talking. We men get irritated trying, and we LOOK like we are simply being intollerant for no good reason while everyone else is having a great time.

Such as. Women are perfectly capapble of several people talking at once while having a great time.

An very interesting book.
By M. S Worthington
I've just read through all the reviews and I've noticed one thing. The people who don't like the book clearly haven't read it properly or got what the author is saying.

There was only one bad review I agreed with at all, and that was the gentleman who pointed out that, even though the book is written by a couple, the emphasis does seem a little more female oriented at times.

However, the majority of the bad reviews are entitled "I'm a woman and I can read maps" or such like. Please don't let this put you off buying the book. The authors state quite clearly in the opening chapters of the book that the information represents an overall picture and that the science is based on what is the case MOST of the time, not ALL of the time. They do tell you quite regularly that there are exceptions.

There is also a test early on in the book to show the probable levels of male hormone you received in the womb. I have done this test with a fair number of people now and it is amazingly accurate. I'm guessing that many of the negative reviews come from people who didn't bother to do this test, which would then make much of the book seem like nonsense.

As I have already said, and think needs saying again, this book is what is generally the case, not what is always the case. Taken in that light, and also taking into account that the authors also say at the start of the book that many will dismiss it on a number of reasons which they list (and every negative reviewer bar the one I agreed with comes somewhere on the list), it really doesn't pay to listen to the negative comments.

This book is not trying to enforce negative stereotypes. Far from it. This book suggests many ways in which certain character traits can be much better understood. For certain chapters where it explains things such as why men tend to sleep around more, it also clearly states that the authors do not believe this makes the behaviour more acceptable, and they actually state that "luckily" there are ways of changing in built natural behavior. I have just read one part of the book that actually says this out right, that the biological instict is not always the best thing to follow in a modern society.

Basically, the negative reviews are from people who had made up their mind before they had even read the book, or who did not want to believe what they saw.

My last point is to the reviewer who claimed that phrases such as "research now shows" mean nothing. There are plenty of facts that do state where the research comes from, and had every single fact been backed up by when, where and who did the reasearch, the book would probably be very hard to read (there would be references on every other line practically), and probably about twice the size!

Buy this book, read the first chapters carefully so you fully understand where the authors are coming from and what they are trying to achieve, and then enjoy the rest.

A fun read - don't take it too seriously!
By David Rasquinha
As with any book that tries to explain the differences between men and women, this book is replete with generalizations. Once you accept that the statements made refer to probabilities that apply to the majority of subjects, but certainly not all persons, the various points start to add up. In the old genetics vs. environment debate, the Peases suggest that the hormones which govern our gender also define the pathways in which we perceive reality, pursue relationships and solve problems. Somewhat similar to the earlier 'Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus", this is a useful look at human behavior that might just reduce the number of male-female battles! For all the authors' claimed research however, this is just a light hearted book that can be enjoyed with profit. Do not expect any scientific breakthroughs, but you can certainly get a better understanding of both your own behavior and the mysterious behavior of the opposite sex, (whichever that may be)! Just read it with an open mind and have fun - don't take it too seriously!

Hobbled online reference.
By Forrest Ritland
Elsevier, in collaboration with Inkling, has crippled online access to this reference. Until February, 2014, Elsevier's ExpertConsultBook online reference books have been fantastic - easy to navigate, intuitive to search across your titles, and efficient to use. Elsevier has shut that down and replaced it with Inkling's clumsy e-book reader. Easy to read. Not easy to use as online reference to find answers to particular diagnostic problems.

With ExpertConsult/Inkling you can no longer search across your purchased books at one go. You have to open and search within each book individually. Open your online book and you get three columns: a navigation column with list of chapters, a reading column, and a notes column (wasting valuable screen space). You have to click the search icon to get a text entry box. Search results then replace the index in the navigation column, 10 at a time, 4-5 visible on a typical computer screen. To review your search results you have to scroll down through the first 10, then click next, then scroll down through the next 10, then click next, ten at a time. The contexts of individual search results are obscure. It shows a little text where your search term appears, but not which chapter or section it is in. Figures (often lots of them) are included in your results list. Individual search results are headed with figure number (not caption, not chapter or section heading) or sub-section titles. Even in the reading pane you can't see chapter and section titles, so you don't know what part of the book you're in. You are limited to linear access through the book - with links to previous and next sections at the top and bottom of the reading pane. To get to the next sub-section you have to scroll down to the bottom of the current sub-section. In order to navigate the index to different chapters or sections you have to exit your search results to get back the index pane.

Very nice comprehensive reivew
By Odyssey
I am not big on writing reviews; however, this book deserves a comment. The chapters are very well written and takes you in depth with every disease. I like the lymphoid neoplasms chapters little more than myeloid. They are written better than the WHO and enable you to understand the background and the classifications in depth. The only draw back I would say is sometime I feel it contains a lot of academic nonsense; but I must say it is limited to a few number of pages. Good review to use before during your fellowship and may be a bench review during sign-out. The online version of the book is excellent. Overall, it is worth buying it.

Starting with a brief history of audio developments the book begins by introducing the concepts of frequency, pitch and loudness and proceeds to develop the idea of a loudspeaker as a system. The book covers such topics as loudspeaker design tradeoffs, spatial loading, diffraction loss, cavity effect and enclosure construction. A complete chapter is devoted to the subject of crossover design including design equations. The second edition adds a new chapter on simulation and analysis which includes design equations for closed and vented type speakers. The appendices contain technical references, design aids, glossaries and a chart depicting 18 different loudspeaker enclosure types.

Changes for the Second Edition:
The second edition brings new material and polishes the first edition with many new or improved illustrations. Chapter 2 was expanded with the second half split into a new Chapter 3 titled "Speaker Response Functions". The discussion of Thiele-Small parameters has been expanded and now covers small-signal parameters vs. large-signal parameters as it explores the role of the test signal level in parameter measurement. The crossover design chapter has been expanded to include formulas for calculating component values for the most popular crossover types. Equations have been added for calculating impedance compensation and attenuation networks. The old Chapter 7 FAQ material was integrated into other chapters as appropriate. A new Chapter 8 titled "Loudspeaker Simulation" has been added and introduces loudspeaker equivalent circuit analysis with equations for calculating the magnitude and phase responses of closed and vented loudspeaker systems. Additional design equations are introduced and then examples are given for calculating the responses of a closed box and a vented box loudspeaker. Detailed design equation summaries are given for closed and vented boxes. Appendix C was added to provide a glossary of symbols and a glossary of terms. The box type charts were moved to Appendix D.

Must have for DIY audio but theory is excellent background for the audiophile who's just in it for the music!
By Michael John Wittman
This book really covers the details. I was particularly interested in cross-over design. Unfortunately there's not much here regarding active-crossovers and the impact on speaker design which is the direction i'd like to head. Nonetheless this is a "must read" book about loudspeakers.

Good starter book, not too heavy on calculations and physics.
By PaulB Karaoke
Good book to get started. Some I already know, some is over my head, some practical for use right now. I want to build a specialized powered speaker. I have read a couple books and lots of articles, tried some softwares. This book Is practical, Another i am reading is too heavy on formulas, and over explaining complex theory. This one is a good for a me, A technician, not an engineer

Overview: Levi Strauss

Until the 1990s, American visitors to the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe could be almost certain that they would be approached by young people asking whether they had any extra pairs of Levi's jeans they were willing to sell. Such was the strength of Levi's as a worldwide brand. Since the 1990s, however, something has changed. Levi's made up 31 percent of the jeans sold in the U.S. market in 1990, a market share that had shrunk to 16.9 percent by 1998 and to 12.1% by 2002. Today's young people do not want to be seen in the same jeans that their parents wore. Levi's advertising campaigns now receive one star out of four in Advertising Age. What happened in so short a time? How could a world-renowned brand from a world-renowned company have stumbled so badly? In order to recover, in 2002 Levi's decided to supply Wal-Mart, the largest company in the United States, with a low-end brand, called Signature, and created two new brands-the high-end Red and more classic Type 1 and Blue. Can this multiple-brand strategy revive the value of Levi's products and lead the company back to the status it had prior to the 1990s?

Marketing Management: A Strategic Perspective

To understand fully what happened to Levi's and to give prospective marketing managers guidelines for how to be effective in their jobs, we need a marketing management textbook that goes beyond an explanation of basic concepts—it must present a strategic, integrative perspective. After teaching a core marketing management course for more than 20 years, I wrote Marketing Management because I came to understand how important the strategic perspective is and I observed that no textbook provided it. Readers of this book will find a strategic framework set up in Chapter 2 which is used throughout the rest of the text. Using strategy as a framework for the entire course is the chief distinguishing feature of this book.

The strategic framework in this second edition of Marketing Management promotes understanding of the second distinguishing feature of this text: its emphasis on the rapid changes thrust upon marketing managers by information technology in general, and the Internet in particular. Today every marketing textbook includes numerous references to the Internet, and despite the crash in Internet company stocks, it remains the most fundamental change in marketing in the last decade. The Internet is a place where products and services are sold, it is a communications and information medium, it facilitates customer service, and it provides other benefits and opportunities to marketing managers and customers. The fundamental nature of this new, information-intensive technology is interactivity, the ability of customers to be active participants in the exchange between consumers and companies (for more than money for goods). This book also discusses at length the many ways that companies' investments in information technology have changed the marketing manager's job, in areas such as information gathering, communications, pricing, and product development.

While looking at the transformations that information technology has brought, this second edition of Marketing Management also integrates the issues involved with marketing technology-based goods and services. What led me to include material on this topic was not only the 14 years I spent near Silicon Valley teaching at the University of California at Berkeley. In discussions with business students at a variety of schools, I have found that many are interested in careers in computer software, biotechnology, semiconductors, and other technology-based industries. While the basics of marketing are the same across all industries, there are some features of high-technology markets (for example, short product life cycles) that make being a marketing manager for high-tech companies a somewhat different experience than being a brand manager for, say, Procter & Gamble's Crest toothpaste.

I have also included illustrations of global contexts by weaving foreign examples throughout the text to convey to the reader that thinking about global markets is a natural part of the job for many marketing managers. In many companies, developing a global marketing strategy is no longer a separate activity from developing a U.S. strategy since an important task is to develop a unified, global brand image.

Another unique feature of the book is the chapter on customer relationship management (Chapter 14). No other marketing management book covers this topical and vita11y important area of marketing in this depth. Few aspects have received as much attention in recent years as the question of how to maintain and enhance long-term relationships with customers. Considerable research has shown that it is less expensive and more profitable to retain customers than it is to try to get customers to switch from competitors. A good example of this recent emphasis on customer retention is the proliferation of loyalty programs. I discuss these programs in Chapter 14 and also provide several examples. It is also covered in Chapter 11 in the context of direct marketing.

Changes from the First Edition

In developing this second edition, I have been careful to retain the best-liked aspects off the first edition—the easy-to-follow writing style, the integration of information technology into the appropriate topics, and the coverage of new and important areas of marketing like customer relationship management. But I have also listened to adopters, students, and reviewers in working to make this second edition an even more effective teaching and learning tool. Major changes include:

  • An entirely revamped look and feel. Marketing is a visual discipline, so along with updated text, advertisements, photos, and graphics, the book has a decidedly, twenty-first century appearance.
  • As would be expected, many of the illustrations have also been updated.
  • There has been a major reorganization of the chapters:
    • Chapters 1 and 2 from the first edition ("The Concept of Marketing" and "The Marketing Manager's Job") have been combined into Chapter 1 of the second edition ("Marketing and the job of the Marketing Manager") and the running example used in the first edition (personal computers) has been eliminated.
    • Chapters 15 and 16 from the first edition ("Strategies for Technology-Based Markets" and "Global Marketing Strategies") have been eliminated and the material woven into the rest of the book. Feedback indicated that these topics are an integral part of marketing today and should be discussed where appropriate throughout the entire book.
    • A new chapter—Chapter 7, "Product Decisions"—was added. This chapter answers the request-for more material on branding and product positioning as well as for more discussion about product line decisions.
    • Chapter 17 from the first edition, "New Product Development," is now Chapter 8, "New Product Development and Marketing," and follows "Product Decisions." This was to better integrate all decisions related to the product into two consecutive chapters. The material on marketing programs for launching new products is also expanded.
    • The material on channels of distribution formerly covered in one chapter (Chapter 9, "Channels of Distribution") is now divided into general channel strategy and the management of indirect channel systems ("Managing Channels of Distribution," Chapter 10) and issues related to direct channels of distribution (Chapter 11, "Managing Direct Channels: Sales Management and Direct Marketing"). This change was made to consolidate the material on direct channels in one chapter.
  • Chapter 14 on Customer Relationship Management has been re-focused around a general framework for CRM. This framework provides an action guide for the marketing manager about how to develop a CRM system from scratch.
  • Organization of the Book

This book is divided into three parts, the contents of which follow this sequence: (1) introduction to the philosophy of marketing, the marketing manager's job, and the complete marketing strategy that forms the backbone of the book, (2) analyses that marketing managers must perform to develop a strategy, and (3) marketing-mix decision making.

The key benefit of this sequence is that it shows very clearly that strategic decisions must be made before tactical decisions. The marketing strategy chapter appears early in the book (Chapter 2) because I do not believe that a discussion about pricing, for example, can take place before students are given a sense of how price must fit into the product's positioning and value proposition or be suitable for the particular market segment being pursued. In other words, marketing managers cannot make pricing decisions without clear direction from the strategy. This is an important feature of the book and distinguishes it clearly from comparable texts. In addition, chapters 3 through 13 repeat the figure (Figure 2-1) describing the overall strategic structure with indications of "where we are" in the development of a complete marketing strategy. This approach continually reinforces the strategic perspective.

Part 1: Marketing Philosophy and Strategy. These two chapters provide a general overview of marketing and the "behind-the-scenes" work that marketing managers do in framing the specific decisions that are ultimately made, such as what price to charge. In addition, the elements of a complete marketing strategy are described. This is a unique aspect of the book since, as noted previously, I cover this material earlier in the discussion than other textbooks.

Chapter 1, "Marketing and the Job of the Marketing Manager," covers the basics of marketing: what it is, why it is important, the importance of a customer/competitor orientation, and the controversy over being led by the customer versus leading the customer. In addition, this chapter covers topics such as marketing orga...

    Poorly edited and badly outdated
    By Jeffrey Cedeno
The fourth edition of Marketing Management exemplifies everything that could possibly be wrong with a textbook. Numerous inaccuracies, grammatical errors, and general disregard for current marketing and product trends run rampant throughout the text and its examples.

I work in web marketing for a living and used this textbook for a graduate level program. I was astounded that the text claimed to have been updated in 2011 as it contains countless examples of unsuccessful products, campaigns and companies that failed to materialize, lost money or market share, and in extreme cases have gone bankrupt since the book was first written. These poor examples are all listed as innovative ideas from industry leaders because the editors never bothered to remove them.

The editors' attempts to update the text simply include adding new case examples as one-paragraph interjections at each new publication, which is laughable considering that many of these examples (think Kodak and Blackberry) collapsed due to poor marketing and planning. Unfortunately, these updates only serve to make the book overly dense through case after case of partial, incomplete data that does little to translate to what constitutes success or failure in marketing. Charts that were obviously inserted at revision points were never updated and needed to be modified or replaced for the 2011 edit. Unfortunately, this did not happen and students who don't know better will suffer as a result.

Concepts in this book may have been valuable ten years ago but its poor editing and overly dense, outdated material does a poor job addressing the digital revolution as anything but a storm on the horizon. The marketing industry should discourage and professors and students from taking this text seriously until it is rewritten from the ground up.

Excellent book from an excellent practitioner/professor
    By Mark Kurowski
This book was one of the readings in the core marketing class I took 2 years ago (the author was the professor). The class was excellent, and the book is too, especially its integration of a strategic perspective throughout the entire book.
I have referred to it many, many times over the past couple years. Of course, if you're already a marketing expert, this book may be too basic for you. For anyone else, I'd definitely say it's worth the price.
