work like you don't need the money

I love this series, but sometimes I just want to reach in and smack these people. It gets very frustrating and their stubbornness is off putting at times, but I guess that's what makes you not want to put the darn book down. I would suggest to the author to do some proofreading or get an editor because the typos and mistakes are distracting.

awesome loved it just like this one before the whole series is wonderful love the characters love the writing love the story.could never put it down when I started it I'm on the last book now and I wish there was more to this series just absolutely wonderful I believe it's the best series I've ever read I hope they make a movie out of it

I love this book as much as I loved the first one :) The only thing that makes me crazy is how many times you have discourage a relationship. Ok once, twice maybe three times even but every time there together is a bit much. Other than that, I love your work, the stories and I look forward too the next book with my fingers crossed :)

Buy it, read it, use it

Barbara Lewis has taken 26 intriguing stories that I'd never heard before about animals and a few plants, and through use of clever analogies has created a book that I have put to good use in my family.

We have all heard of the story of the tortoise and the hare. It is not in this book. But the stories in this book are similar in that they are analogies--very good ones. Each story is clear and well-written. At the conclusion of each one, there are several enjoyable exercises for a teacher, parent, or grandparent (which is what I am) to use in teaching a valuable lesson. The book lives up to its title: "Building Character with True Stories from Nature." I recommend it to anyone that needs some good stories for children. I also think that any school that uses the book would be ahead in the teaching of character to young people. So buy it, read it, and use it.

A nice addition to the printed book is a CD with over a hundred pages that include handouts of the stories, activities, and quizzes.

This latest book from Barbara Lewis is another educational and entertaining work from a great author. The book is a useable tool to help children (and adults) understand and develop good character traits. The illustration of various traits in the context of animals, plants, bugs, and fish, helps students remember these qualities. The listed activities are a useful way for students to internalize the qualities and understand how they play out in real life.

I would recommend this book to parents and teachers of elementary-aged children. It could also be adapted for the use of older students.

About the Author
Susan Blau is a professor and director of the Undergraduate Writing program and the Writing Center at Boston University's College of Communication. She received her BS in Education from the University of Vermont and her MA in English from the University of Connecticut and was a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellow. Her background is in linguistics, composition and rhetoric, and American Literature. She has taught writing in both English and Communication Departments and has published articles, conducted workshops, and presented papers at national conferences on the topics of teaching writing, writing across the curriculum, and writing center research and practice. Blau has served as the book review editor for the Association for Expanded Perspectives in Learning for the past three years.

Kathryn Burak has an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and a BS in English from Kutztown University. Kate has taught writing at North Carolina State University, the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and Boston University. Her poetry and fiction have been published in such journals and magazines as FICTION, MISSOURI REVIEW, WESTERN HUMANITIES REVIEW, GETTYSBURG REVIEW, and SEVENTEEN.

good book

this book was bought because it was a required textbook. I really liked the way it gives you lots of examples within the reading. The only thing I did not like about this book was the size of the chapters. There are lots of pages for each chapter to read. When you don't have alot of time this becomes an inconvenience.

Reviewers were happy to report that the Hunger Games trilogy is alive and well, and all looked forward to the third book in the series after this one's stunning conclusion. But they disagreed over whether Catching Fire was as good as the original book Hunger Games or should be viewed as somewhat of a "sophomore slump." Several critics who remained unconvinced by Katniss's romantic dilemma made unfavorable comparisons to the human-vampire-werewolf love triangle in Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series. But most reviewers felt that Catching Fire was still a thrill because Collins replicated her initial success at balancing action, violence, and heroism in a way that will enthrall young readers without giving them (too many) nightmares.

An improvement in every aspect!

All too often, I find that sequels just don't provide a worthy follow up to the original or that sometimes the original story is just so incomplete that I hardly have any desire to move forward for fear of never receiving a satisfying conclusion. For this reason, I often stay away from sequels and even series in general, at least in terms of books. I think this is part of the reason it took me so long to pick up Suzanne Collins' CATCHING FIRE (The Hunger Games Book 2) despite having read the original and seen both of the respective movies a long while ago. The CATCHING FIRE movie adaptation was one of the few movie sequels that I ever thought to be drastically better than the previous film in every way possible. That's not to say that it made me like the first any less, just that I felt it had improved in all aspects. And so I went into this book with timid excitement, hoping I would feel the same way.

The book version of this story impressed me exactly as I hoped it would. It is an improvement on Collin's already fantastic narrative that feels fresh and more mature while also allowing readers to spend more time with her fantastic characters, world, and story.

CHARACTERS
Katniss and Peeta are back for another adventure. They've done the impossible together and now they have returned home, but things will never be the same. They are locked into a false romance where Peeta now realizes that his affections towards Katniss are only reciprocated when the pair are in front of a camera. He is made to feel even more alone than he did at the start of the games while Katniss deals with her own set of issues. Gale is now referred to as her cousin despite that being far from the truth. On one hand, this makes it easier for Katniss to be seen with him, but it also means they will never be together since it is ultimately her destiny to marry Peeta, whether her feelings for him are true or not. She and Gale come to the realization that there is something between them and Katniss realizes that Gale is another boy in her life that she has been hurting.

Then there's the fractured relationship between the Capitol and the Districts which she is also forced to acknowledge when President snow appears in her home and threatens her loved ones if she doesn't play along with what he wants. Despite her surviving the Hunger Games tournament, the "games" aren't really over at all. She's still fighting for her and Peeta's lives, but now she has the lives of her mother, Prim, Gale, Gale's family, Haymich, and probably Peeta's family to worry about. She may also very well be fighting for the lives of every District in Panem. President Snow's role is quite big here which is a nice change of pace since he remained largely unseen in the first book. Then there's Plutarch Heavensbee, the new head gamemaker who is a bit more removed, but what parts he is in are quite good. Katniss also meets up with a variety of previous victors like the flamboyantly handsome Finnick, the aggressive Joanna, the clever Beetee, and deranged Wirress. Those who have already seen the movie know what circumstances Katniss meets these other victors under, but I won't spoil that part of the story since it is far more of a surprise in the book. The only other thing that can really be said is that each of these new faces is a wonderful addition to the cast and that they all have a lot to add to the story as a whole.

WORLD/SETTING
The world that Katniss returns to is not the same one that she left. She's a victor now which means she gets a fancy new home in a special section of District 12 and she must be part of the victory tour where the victor of the games visits each district and honors the fallen tributes before attending a lavish dinner party. It also means she will have to become a mentor to the future tributes of District 12. At least those are all of the things that would happen to a typical victor.

This year is different, this year there are two victors because of Katniss's defiance to the Capitol. Her refusal to play by their rules means that she has Peeta to go through all of this with, but it has also sets into motion events beyond what she would ever be able to predict. Uprisings have sprung up in several districts in the spirit of following Katniss's example. District 12 sees a stronger security presence which imposes brutal restrictions upon the citizen's way of life. Nothing Katniss does seems to be right and nothing she says can quell the anger that builds up against the Capitol. She finds herself in an impossible situation where the world of the games and the real world are now largely one in the same. Katniss never escaped the arena, only set it loose upon the world and now she is the symbol of a rebellion that threatens to bring end to Panem.

Although everything is different now, this book brings readers to a variety of places within Panem and introduces us to locations that were previously only mentioned. Collins paints each with simple, yet vibrant descriptions which will probably make you both happy and remorseful that they are on the brink of destruction. The destitution of 12 no longer seems as bad when other districts are portrayed as mammoth prisons where inmates are born into servitude of an unforgiving Capitol.

PLOT/TONE
The overall content and tone of this narrative is a few shades darker than the previous installment which probably says a lot considering the first one explored a gladiatorial tournament in which children fought to the death. Minor details aside, things are a lot more serious now since the stakes are so much higher. Before, readers worried about the lives of twenty four young tributes, but now they are presented with an entire world whose continued existence seems highly in question. Katniss, our once empowered heroine somehow seems so small now that the conflict involves forces far beyond her control. To be fair, they are beyond anyone's control, but Katniss finds herself especially vulnerable since she is the catalyst for all the terrifying changes going on around her.

Katniss also can't just fake it till she makes it anymore. Peeta and her have to face the consequences of their lovers routine in the arena and try to come to an understanding, if not a salvaged friendship. Gale's involvement adds further complication for Katniss's already overwhelmed set of teenage emotions. All the other characters are also a bit worse off this time around which adds an additional layer of edginess to it all. Some characters are more in the dark than others about the events happening around them which leads readers into an ever-spinning web of secrets, lies, and manipulation. Even having already seen the film, I felt delightfully in suspense the entire way through this book, partially in thanks to being able to experience the events through Katniss's point of view which offers a fresh take on things. Again, there are a number of really wonderful surprises in store and if you haven't already seen this movie, then I won't spoil them for you here. If you're already familiar with this story, then I can promise that this ride won't be any less enjoyable a second time around.

As a kind of aside to all this, it is worth noting that this book felt far less like a true YA novel than the first one did. There is significantly more nudity, stronger language and sexual references, and the depictions of violence are far more graphic this time around. Even the overall language and writing style that Collins employs feels quite a bit more grown up than her last book. Not that this series has ever really been known as kid-friendly, but parents might want to know that this one definitely pushes the limits of what can/should go into a YA novel.

CONCLUSION
I really do think this is a series that no reader should pass up on. If the first book didn't quite sell you, then I'd strongly urge you give this one a shot. If you loved the first, then it really only gets better here and I can honestly say that I am extremely excited to dive into the third and final book of this trilogy, though I may try and savor it a bit more whereas I kind of tore through CATCHING FIRE as though there was no tomorrow.

The plot is more serious, the writing style and content are more adult, the new characters are a win all around, and this is just a book that I will probably love forever.

more adult than the first one

While the 1st book in the series is more obviously YA fiction, I was pleasantly surprised by the depths of more mature themes this second book touched. Other reviewers complain Katniss is too passive in this book, but frankly if they read the 1st book with more attention, they'd realize Katniss is the ultimate unwilling hero. Also she may be a good hunter and a good survivor but she is not the sharpest and most devious of minds. Also the only person she really cares for is her sister. People who have experienced hardship sometimes feel they are already overwhelmed by their own problems and will leave others to deal with their own. Some will even come to the point of despising those who can't fend for themselves in a "I did it, why can't you?" attitude I can certainly recognize. These traits are not, in my opinion, flaws necessarily, and make her more interesting and complex.
One thing I didn't like much was another round of Hunger Games. Here the author made the same mistake of so many other sequels, of taking a good idea and thinking that making it bigger, more complicated and more belabored will make it better. For me it didn't. The first arena was believable (I have gone camping enough times to easily picture it in my mind), but the second is just over the top and overdone.
If you read this book with some rabid fan attitude, where any departure from what you think the series should be is seen as sacrilege, then you may not like it. If you read it for pure entertainment, I think this is a very good sequel.

good first half but it got messy after that

The surprise element is gone after the excellent first installment. I was irritated by Katniss' insistent to keep Peeta alive while sacrificing herself in the process. While Coliins painted a virtuous Katniss who was selfless and saint like, it came across as pretentious and unconvincingly hollow. Why am I so harsh? Firstly, she didn't love Peeta. But more importantly, she had her little sister Prim, her mother and Dale to care about. Remaining alive is not selfish because she would be doing it for these three loved ones who are the most important people in the world to her. Thankfully, this hole was covered in the film itself. Egregiously, her fake pregnancy ruse was not uncovered at all in the book or the film. Just an unbelievable lapse by Capitol or by Collins given the futuristic premise and age of advance technology. So I will rate the film version superior to the book.

About the Author

Arvind Bansal is a professor of computer science at Kent State University. A member of IEEE and ACM, he is an area editor of Tools with Artificial Intelligence. His research interests include the areas of concurrent logic programming, fault-tolerant agent-based systems, knowledge bases, program analysis, XML-based multimedia languages and systems, bioinformatics, biological computing, and proteomics. He received a PhD in computer science from Case Western Reserve University.

Confusingly bad English, sloppy with the facts

I received this book only yesterday and spent one hour with it so far. The result has been so negative that I write this review already now to warn others (after all, this is a recently appeared book that will probably attract some interest by programming language experts). Should my view of this book change after reading it in whole (something that is becoming less and less likely), I will update this review.

The book obviously did not get a thorough copy editing from the publisher - there is at least one English language error in every paragraph. Apart from clumsy language, the author often uses unusual terms that make you wonder whether he follows current scientific and professional discussion. Further, there are numerous factual errors that create the impression that the author is not an expert on everything he mentions (maybe he is an expert on some things, but how should the reader discern which is which). I quote the paragraph on the type system of C++ (7.9.2, p. 269) that provides evidence for all three shortcomings (clumsy language, unfamiliar terms, factual errors), but there are most probably far more of these in the book:

"C++ is a strongly and statically typed object-oriented language. C++ also supports basic types [1]; structured types such as arrays, struct, union and recursive data types [2]; and object class [3]. It also supports parametric polymorphism through the use of template-based programming, and inclusion polymorphism through inheritance. Template-based programming declares a generic method using a type variable that is instantiated at run-time [4]. It also supports overloading and coercion. However, C++ does not support subrange [sic!]. Built-in basic types include only integer, float, char, Boolean [5] and string [6]. Unlike Ada, complex numbers and rational number declarations [7] are not built-in. C++ supports string as a class library [8]. It also supports extra precision integers and floating point declarations such as double [9]."

[1] B. Stroustrup named these "built-in types" or "fundamental types" in "The C++ programming language", 4th ed., section 2.3; no one calls them "basic types".
[2] There is no such type concept in C++, at least not as an alternative to the other structured types the author names. Of course an array, struct or union could contain an element that is again an array, struct, or union, but no one would give it a special name just because of that.
[3] Yes, the wording and punctuation is literally from the book: "; and object class." Correct would be to say "... and classes" (or "... and class types").
[4] Type variables in templates are instantiated at compile-time, not at run-time. This is a major factual error.
[5] "Integer" and "Boolean" are English terms (the corresponding C++ terms would be int and bool), while float and char are C++ terms - a confusing mixture of language levels.
[6] string is not a built-in type in C++, but a library class.
[7] C++ programmers would phrase this as "there are no built-in types for complex numbers and rational numbers". "Declarations" are what you see in a header file instead.
[8] Apart from contradicting what the author wrote before (see [6]), C++ programmers would phrase this as "C++ provides the string type as a library class".
[9] double is not a declaration, but a type.

Omissions of copy-editing do not only pertain to the language, but also to consistency: In the chapter outline for chapter 7, it is promised that Ada 2012, Hope and C# will be covered; instead chapter 7 covers Ada, C++ (that's the paragraph I quoted) and Modula-3 (not to forget that calling such a one-paragraph treatment a "case study" as this book does is a bit pretentious, too).

TOTAL GARBAGE!!!

I was among the few who had to use this textbook literally during its first time on the market. At first, I was extremely excited seeing that he somehow made an effort in the first chapter but as I kept on reading it,it literally looked like he had multiple webpages open trying to infuse their respective ideas into this book.

CONS:
First of, his ideas are scattered all over the place in each and every one of the chapters. Never did I manage to fully comprehend what he talks about in each chapter to the extent where I would sincerely feel comfortable with the material.
Second,his explanations for most terms is just ridiculously stupid and tends to leave you more confused prior to reading the book.
Third,I even had one of my PhD (Computer Science) friends read a subsection of the book and try to explain to me what he was trying to convey and even he admitted to the rather poor wording,frequently misleading and confusing concepts which he was trying to put across.

PROS:
The only thing about this book which really made me even continue reading it,was the effort he kept in truly explaining his examples in such detail. Every time I read this book, I was dying to get to the examples in order to see exactly what he is mumbling in all of the prior paragraphs. He even uses an entire page sometimes just to explain one example.WARNING:If you don't pay maximum attention to it,you might even end up getting lost in the example explanation itself.

GENERALLY:
Unlike me, if you have the luxury of getting another book for the class, GET THE OTHER BOOK ASAP! DON'T BE A HOT-HEAD and get this book for I tell you,MAY THE 4TH BE WITH U in trying to comprehend the contents.This is truly not a textbook you'd want to read whilst listening to music (coming from a person who listens to music while doing Math and Programming) or doing any other activity.Even if you pay so much attention to it, the wording and structure in general will leave you in an even bigger dilemma.

But if you're unfortunate as me and have to use this textbook for your class,I highly recommend you use references from other books or the internet prior to reading the textbook.Read accredited online articles first about the respective topic,understand them then refer back to the book.This is the only way I even comprehended the 3/4 that I did of every chapter.

Once you read Chapter 6(Garbage Collection) and get done with it,you'll ask yourself the same question I asked myself awhile back,"Why isn't this book part of the garbage that the garbage collector has to dispose off?"

This book is officially going to my "Wall Of Shame".

Comprehensive Reference To Ceramics

This became one of those costly book purchases students have come to resent: required for an introductory level class in ceramics, part of the core requirements towards a studio degree, expensively imposed on a class the bulk of whom will never continue on in ceramics, therefore ultimately destined to become a neglected text sitting on a dusty shelf or returned during university book buy-back for a pittance. This is a shame, as the book is one of the more comprehensive and beautifully put together texts of its kind, and had it been required of students whose clear intention was to go on in ceramics, its obligatory purchase would have been more valued and appreciated.
Containing information well beyond the scope of an introductory survey of ceramic processes, this book is densely packed with information, providing a historical and cultural overview of the use and development of one of the most ancient of the arts, as well as detailed discussions of its various forms and construction, the mixing of clays, the necessary chemistry, kilns, and clay's many glazings and firings. Appendixes and charts containing quite a number of recipes for both mixing clay and creating slips, colorants and glazes are provided at the back, encouraging experimentation, as well as a basic description of the chemical constituents encountered in ceramics. In terms of the latter, both within the text and the appendixes, concerns of potential toxicity are highlighted, providing valuable and essential information often overlooked when working with the potentially hazardous components present in most clays and colorants. Well organized and detailed, the text is also liberally endowed with photographs and drawings, providing clear visual examples of both the equipment and techniques the ceramicist may encounter, as well as beautiful color plates showing contemporary examples of noted artists' work using a variety of forms and processes. These plates exemplify the diverse and often stunning manner of expression that can be captured in clay, ranging from the sculptural and painterly to installation and multimedia. Their inclusion, along with the depth and breadth of information presented here, certainly justify the price asked for this text, and this book should grace the library or studio of any serious student or practitioner of ceramics. And, I suspect, there is enough information provided here to allow the student that has access to a studio and equipment to begin learning ceramics without the necessity of a classroom.

MUST READ

Anyone getting into ceramic art must read this book. I really wish I had it when I began my venture into slipcasting. I knew nothing and used other sources for information when I could have saved time and frustration by reading this book. The part of the book on moldmaking was worth the price alone. The other moldmaking books I've read left a lot of blank spaces for the beginner. As a visual learner, this book is rich with pics and illustrations.It is comprehensive and something I will be using for many years to come.

Hands In Clay Volume IV

My college ceramics class had to buy this book. It's really good, the section on how to mix glazes using all of the different frits and stains is very informative. The pictures are inspiring, and the book also gives many techniques for throwing and handbuilding.
