Rosenstock-Huessy has described "Out of Revolution," his history of western man, as his favorite book. This book is an entirely fresh version of his landmark "Die europ�ischen Revolutionen," and was written after his immigration to the United States. It presents the reader with Rosenstock-Huessy's method of perceiving man, history, and society. He reweaves strands of the old disciplines of philosophy, theology, and history into an entirely new fabric.
In his introduction, Harold Berman writes:
"That this book - written six decades ago - is without any question an extraordinary book, a remarkable book, a fascinating book, has not saved it from relative obscurity. It is directed against conventional historiography, and for the most part the conventional historians have either ignored it or denounced it. ... I have no doubt that one day - perhaps soon - the academic historians will discover that Rosenstock-Huessy was also one of the great pioneers in a new and significant interpretation of the history of mankind.
'Out of Revolution' is history in the best sense of the word. Although it embodies original scholarship of the highest professional quality, it is written primarily for the amateur, the person of general education, who wants to know where we came from and whither we are headed. But it is also a theory of history: how history should be understood, how historians should write about it."

The historian Page Smith considers this Rosenstock-Huessy's greatest work in English. He wrote in his book "The Historian and History" (Knopf 1964):
"Eugen Rosenstock-Huessy was one of those Europeans who at the end of World War I decided that the war had made familiar categories of thought obsolete. He undertook, in a series of books and articles, to illuminate the relation between history and the human experience and to explicate the progress of man through history toward a common future. ... The revolutions of mankind, Huessy wrote, 'create new time-spans for our life on earth. They give man's soul a new relation between present, past, and future; and by doing so they give us time to start our life on earth all over again, with a new rhythm and a new faith.' This is the framework for Huessy's history of Europe and it may safely be said to be the first historical work written under the new dispensation. As such, it is of profound significance for contemporary history, but its very uniqueness has left it high and dry on the banks of academe. Nobody knew what to make of it because nobody had seen anything like it before."
Reinhold Niebuhr said of "Out of Revolution":
"Really a remarkable book, full of profound insights into the meaning of modern European history. I have not read a book in a long time which is so imaginative in relating the various economic, religious and political forces at play in modern history, to each other. Ordinary historical interpretations are pale and insipid in comparison with it."
Lewis Mumford wrote:
"Rosenstock-Huessy's is a powerful and original mind. What is most important in this philosopher's work is the understanding of the relevance of traditional values to a civilization still undergoing revolutionary transformations; and this contribution will gain rather than lose significance in the future."

The most underrated book of the century. A work of genius.

'Our passions give life to the world.' That's the premiss upon which Rosenstock-Huessy begins his brilliant study of the 'total revolutions' of the last millenium. He may not always be right about the details or even his conclusions about the origins or meanings of the great revolutions, but he is always insightful, and he always takes you into areas which are worth exploring further. Rosenstock-Huessy knows that catastrophes are the cauldrons of creation, and while there have been critics and advocates of revolution aplenty, few have attempted to trace in such detail the alchemical processes of the great revolutions of the Western world. This is a masterpiece by a thinker who simply knows more about more things than any other twentieth century figure I have read. In addition to being a great historian and sociologist, he has a tremendous understanding of the human heart. His other books are also definitely worth checking out.

The Best Book of the 20th Century

Eugen was a friend of mine and the teacher of my colleague--Page Smith--one of the great American historians. Eugen came to teach at UCSC after his retirement from Dartmouth. His book on the history of European culture is one of the relatively unknown treasures of modern letters. Eugen was clairvoyant in his unique ability to portray the national character of the major cultures of the West, on the theme of revolution. Although he was a scholar of profound learning, he never lost the passion of his personal voice, which infuses everything he wrote; how appropriate as one of the figures in the I-Thou circle of Martin Buber and Franz Rosenzweig. The book was born out of the agony of the trenches of the lst world war, at Verdun, where the curse over Europe was uttered in the 9th century at the Treaty of Verdun. Eugen gives us the integration of European culture in all of its unique individuality, from nation to nation. Absolutely essential reading for those in charge of the current European Commission and the Council of Europe and the Museum of Europe in Brussels.
This is the book about the unified cultural heritage of Europe.

The stories have a slow, deliberate, and unsettling current. Rather, these disturbing tales are about vulnerable, wild, rebellious, scared young women, several of whom fall victim to older, predatory males who know how to lure them with the thrill of danger and make them betray the best in themselves. One of the best stories is "Life after High School," a story in which a woman's teen past comes into the present and changes what she thought she knew. Oates makes poetry with ordinary words that take readers right into the restless psyches of young women terrified of their own violence. Far from role models, these characters wrestle with the fearful fantasies they dare not even articulate, "when every other thought you think is a forbidden thought . . . that must have come to you from somewhere else from someone you don't know who knows you." Adolescent Tales

Small Avalanches is a collection of short stories previously published by Joyce Carol Oates whose thematic link is that each centers around the life of an adolescent or teenage girl. The focus on this age group is appropriate for this extremely talented writer who has written in an incredible range of styles and voices, but has often focused on the lives of young woman especially in her novels such as Man Crazy, Blonde and I'll Take You There to name just a few.
Oates has said in an interview with Diane Rehm in 2002:
"I feel probably quintessentially very adolescent... I guess it's just that age of romance and yearning and some scepticism, sometimes a little bit of cynicism."
The temperament of this age group that Oates so readily identifies with is something that the author is able to ingeniously capture in this series of tales. She shows in her female characters those intense feelings she marks as emblematic of this age group from a variety of perspectives.
Despite the close ages of all these girls there is a tremendous diversity of voice within the stories. They are sometimes vulnerable as the girls are primarily perceived or surprisingly self-aware which gives them the ability to manipulate their own situation. This occurs in some of the stories like Capricorn where a girl named Melanie meets a man on the internet who begins obsessively watching her play tennis and Small Avalanches where a girl walking home is followed by a suspicious looking man she nearly escapes. Some of the girls from these stories are timid, naive and orbit danger with curious innocence. In others, like Bad Girls where three close sisters invade the privacy of their mother's new boyfriend and The Model where a girl meets a man in the park who starts paying her large sums to pose for sketches, the girls are defensive to a militant degree. These diverse perspectives give a refreshing perspective when contemplating an age group so heavily stereotyped. Oates also uses multifarious structures to tell the girls' stories producing a wide range of possible meanings and giving a unique accent to their particular situations. Some take on a creepy gothic tone as in The Sky Blue Ball where a girl begins throwing a ball back and forth with a faceless participant over a wall and Haunted in which a mysterious violent woman appears to two curious girls who were searching a house they thought was empty. The most experimental structure Oates uses is in the story How I Contemplated the World from the Detroit House of Correction and Began My Life Over Again where you read a girl's notes for a school paper that descend into an intense disjointed personal deliberation about her past and future. However, all the stories are incredibly accessible to read while still challenging the reader to think complexly about growing up and the nature of identity. Each gives a deep focus on the consciousness of these girls and presents in some way a close perspective of their point of view. The stories also examine the process in which these girls become self conscious about how they are viewed by the rest of the world. It is an extremely emotional, varied and pleasurable read.

For the Bad Girls

Joyce Carol Oates dedicates her latest collection of short stories, �Small Avalanches� to �The Bad Girls.� Be it Ingrid in �Man Crazy,� or Anellia in �Ill Take you There,� Oates has always been fascinated, really infatuated with the outcasts, the fringe dwellers, the lonely hearts. More to the point, Oates enjoys writing female characters that struggle and fight against what society considers �normal� behavior�whatever the heck normal means in the society of Oates� world and in the world in general. It is the tension of this ambiguity that Oates revels in.
�Small Avalanches� begins with the story, �Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?� which was the basis for the film �Smooth Talk� starring Laura Dern as Connie and Treat Williams as Arnold Friend. Reading it again now, and even with the visuals of the film spinning around my head, I was struck by the smoldering sexuality of the story. Connie is 15 and she has one foot stuck in childhood and the other one, always ready to high-tail it to the highway roadhouses, in adulthood. Oates describes her: ��Everything about her as two sides to it, one for home and for anywhere that was not home: her walk, which could be childlike and bobbing, or languid enough to make someone thinking she was hearing music in here head�her laugh, which was cynical and drawling at home but high pitched and nervous anywhere else.�
Arnold Friend becomes Connie�s �friend,� stalker really. Arnold is older, handsome, drives a spiffy car and is definitely dangerous and what he offers Connie is a view of adulthood she cannot turn down: it�s glamour and attraction cannot be ignored. The denouement finds Connie more experienced in the adult world that she craves but is not ready for. The inevitability of the situation is decidedly sensual yet undeniably moralistic: Connie�s story is ultimately a cautionary tale. One in which a bad girl gets what she deserves or is asking for. But is she better for it?
Oates mines this particular subject matter again in the more up to date, computer savvy story �Capricorn� also included in this collection.
The title story of this collection, �Small Avalanches� is cruel but slight: a young girl Nancy, through the unaffected, natural conceit and innocence of youth avoids the advances of an older man: �He looked so funny, bent over and clutching at his chest, pretending to have a heart attack or maybe having one, a little one, for all I knew. This will teach you a lesson, I thought.�
It is this youthful innocence and lack of foresight that also imbues �Bad Girls� a story about three daughters who set out to investigate their mother�s boyfriend: �Nor did we set out to destroy our mother�s man friend Isaak Drumm, exactly�(but we) confirmed the neighborhood�s and our relatives� judgment of us, that we were bad. And not only bad in ourselves but the cause of somebody else being bad, too.�
Throughout �Small Avalanches� we encounter writing of uncommon grace: �Her eyes were like washed glass, her eyebrows and lashes were almost white, she had a snub nose and Slavic cheekbones and a mouth that could be sweet or twisty and smirky depending on her mood.� Or razor sharp writing that cuts to the heart of a matter: �It�s true, all you have heard of the vanity of the old. Believing ourselves young, still, behind our aged faces�mere children, and so very innocent!�
�Small Avalanches� was intended for the young people�s market as was Oates� earlier �Big Mouth and Ugly Girl.� But Oates� has not toned down her natural gift for revealing the underside and the emotional truth of her characters actions and words. Far from it, she pulls no punches in revealing her patented, twisted yet humanistic worldview. Be forewarned, though: a visit to Oatesiana will leave you a bit shocked and warm under the collar but startlingly as refreshed as having just stepped out of a cool shower on a hot day.

Do adolescent teens like reading about stupid adolescent teens?

I was on a 7-hour train ride, and figured I'd give the book a shot. My first sign of trouble was the dedication of the first story to Bob "Lingerie" Dylan, but I pressed on. A lot of seemingly intelligent people are still under his spell, blissfully coasting on the remnants of his image from the days when he wasn't a Starbucks sellout.

Anyway, the first story is about a bad thing that happens to an innocent teen-aged girl. Throughout the story you feel like you're watching a bad horror movie, screaming "don't go into the attic." This feeling, I would learn, is the unifying theme of this book.

Exhausted after one story, I put the book down and looked at the bland countryside passing by. Boredom took over after 15 minutes, and after cursing myself for not bringing along a backup, I went back to the book.

I stopped reading the next story, "The Sky Blue Ball," after it looked like another horrible thing was going to happen to another stupid little girl. She may have turned out fine, but I just didn't have the emotional energy. I took another break and headed to "Small Avalanches." This one, again, is about a stupid teen girl and a horrible thing that could happen to her. This 13 year-old girl, incidentally, is the one portrayed on the cover. Maybe it's the hormones in the food, but the person on the cover looks a little too busty to be 13.

I skipped around a bit, figuring the stupid little girl theme was bound to run out. "Haunted" and "Capricorn" were, refreshingly, about TWO stupid teen girls hurtling blindly into certain doom. The book finally abandons the idiot theme in the last two stories, "The Visit," and "The Model." These are excellent stories about strong girls who, instead of being thrown to the wolves by their own ignorance, make their own decisions, explore their feelings, and are active participants in their lives.

Maybe this book was meant as a series of cautionary tales about how teens should avoid danger (it mostly boils down to "don't talk to slimy looking strangers"), but for anyone with half a brain, it's an extremely frustrating and annoying read.

About the Author
Dr. Bob Moorehead has been the pastor of Overlake Christian Church in Kirkland, Washington for over 25 years. He has seen the church grow from 90 people to a congregation of over 6000 today. His very active and successful ministry there emphasizes evangelism, teaching and counseling. Dr. Moorehead holds a Ph.D. from California School of Theology as well as an undergraduate degree from Phillips University and a Bachelor of Divinity degree from The Graduate Seminary. He is the author of 9 other books. Bob and his wife Glenita live in Kirkland, Washington. They have three grown children: Darla, Tammi, and Jeff and they enjoy nine grandchildren.

Devout Christians should love this book!

This book is best described as a collection of Christian-themed essays or sermonettes. Someone posted an excerpt from the very last essay in the book, “The Paradox of our Age,” online which caught my attention and compelled me to buy the book. I thought I was buying a philosophy or social-commentary book but that’s not what this book is. This book is little more than well-written cheerleading for the Christian church. I almost returned the book unread but I did want to read the rest of the excerpt I’d found online and, as an open-minded nonbeliever, I read the whole book in hopes the author could present a cogent pro-religious point of view that might change my mind. But I read nothing that changed my mind and what I read actually reaffirmed my non-belief in religion and the church.

The reason this book reinforces my own status as nonbeliever is the (all too typical) language used. First I found little information about personal growth or enlightenment. Secondly I only found the word “love” mentioned in two of the essays. There are references that are clearly intolerant and homophobic but the worst, in my view, are the heavy-handed and too-frequent references to conflict and violence. He over uses terms and phrases like: “hatred,” “sin,” “battle,” “conquering,” “uncompromising,” “battle scarred,” “enemy,” “blood of martyrs,” “victorious,” ”the winner,” and it goes on and on. This is the very language that turned me away from the church in the first place! I’m not looking for a fight.

If you’re a devout, church-going Christian this book is for you. If you are of a different faith or a nonbeliever there’s little here for you ---except that last essay, “The Paradox of our Age.” “The Paradox of our Age” is superb and spot-on for our time ---and it contains no references to god, Jesus or the church.

A Heart-Pounding Thriller

This is a well written, tightly plotted YA spy thriller with three-dimensional characters and a story full of surprises. The Washington D.C. area high school girl known as Alexandra Gastone -- with the adorable boyfriend who wonders why she’s behaving so strangely, the secret best friend with whom she shares a love of video games, and the devoted grandpa in the CIA -- is actually a sleeper spy, separated from her family when very young and trained for years to replace the real Alexandra. Indoctrinated with an intense patriotism and love of her native land, the so-called Alexandra has given up almost everything about her real self to serve the cause, and she’s sure she’s doing the right thing…until everything get complicated. Suddenly, her life could depend on figuring out where the truth lies and who to trust. I love that this story ended with a satisfying and shocking conclusion, but also cried out for a sequel, which I hope comes out soon! Excellent!

Bourne Identity for teens

...They Call Me Alexandra Gastone is a fast-paced spy thriller that I thoroughly enjoyed. I'm pretty partial to spy thrillers in general, and this book did not disappoint. Maclagan managed to capture the every day life of a normal teen and deftly weave it with the taut and precarious existence of a sleeper cell living a lie, waiting for activation. The complexity of the Alexandra's world was very well thought out and plausible. This was a great, nail-biting read and I was happy to see that the author intends a sequel. I really want to know what kind of trouble Ms.Gastone lands herself in next!

An excellent young adult thriller that is a must-read for fans of complex heroines battling against powerful forces..

Teenager Alexandra "Lex" Gladstone has a fairly typical life in some ways - high school, boyfriend, college applications, doting grandfather - but in other ways she's completely unique.. Not just for her two eyes of different colours. Although they played a part in the twists her life took.

Years ago Lex was Milena, a young girl in Olissa, a state that has been battled over by the Russians, Iran, America and others. Recruited to Perun, a training academy for spies, she was groomed as a sleeper agent, indoctrinated to the quest for Olissian independence, then inserted into her mission: replacing the real Lex Gladstone, who died in a tragic car crash with her parents. Milena/Lex is raised by Albert, her American grandfather, who himself works for the CIA. She doesn't know when she will be called on to activate and undertake a mission. Until then, she's a regular American teenage girl. Even if she keeps everyone at distance.

Then she gets her mission, to assassinate the US-friendly President of Olissa, and pin the blame on her grandfather.

TA MacLagan weaves a page-turning tale, that is slickly written, and full of intrigue both in terms of the twisting plotline, and the character of Lex herself. An accomplished and highly trained young woman who battles with herself and where she fits, just like any teenager. Who tries to find a balance between her mission and her life.

There are some echoes of the likes of THE HUNGER GAMES, with its intriguing and kickass heroine up against the world, making choices that affect her and others' lives, and fans of that series may easily be hooked by the adventures of Alexandra Gastone. But TA MacLagan also brings something fresh in her storytelling. A great read.

About the Author
Richard Newton is an entrepreneur, consultant and writer. After spending almost ten years writing about business for The Sunday Telegraph and The Mail on Sunday, Richard decided to switch sides, walk the talk and run his own business. He co-founded a software company that supplies brand management solutions for many of the world’s largest consumer brands.
He is now co-founder, director, board adviser and mentor at a number of tech companies and start-ups including Call Trunk, Screendragon and Txt2Buy. (Calltrunk, an audio and video search tool, is tipped to be one of the fastest growing search companies of 2014.)
He runs consultancy Newton Principles and writes about being creative in business, the importance of good language in business and the urgency to do things.

I loved this book

A very successful friend recently told me that the secret of his success was that he always thinks big. So when I saw this book I decided to see what tips it might have.

I loved this book. It is easy to read and jammed packed full of great practical ideas and tips.

I kept having to put the book down to jot down new ideas that I wanted to implement straight away. Less than 24 hours later I have already used some of them successfully to take a new business venture to the next level.

If you want to take your business, your thinking and your life to the next level then this book is a must read.

This book offers a mental journey with the energy, pace, and impact of a Cirque du Soleil performance.

As I sometimes do, I read this book in combination with another, published in 1959: David J. Schwartz's The Magic of Thinking Big: Set Your Goals High...and Then Exceed Them. There are differences between them, of course. (How could there not be?) However, both stress the great importance of personal accountability, of taking ownership of the consequences of one's decision. I agree that we cannot control everything that happens to us but we can control how we respond to whatever happens to us. Also, both David Schwartz and Newton are convinced -- as am I -- that most human limits are self-imposed. This is what Henry Ford had in mind many years ago when observing, "Whether you think you can or think you can't, you're probably right."

Newton has the significant advantage of calling upon extensive research in neuroscience that was not available to Schwartz 55 years ago. (However, there have been two updated editions of the Schwartz book but the key insights and recommendations remain the same, as has human nature.) Aristotle observed long ago, "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit." Perhaps Newton had that thought in mind when developing these "Nine Habits of Thinking Big," accompanied by my annotations:

1. Swim Don't Float [or Sink]: Keep moving (especially in rough water) and in the right direction. Not all change is progress but no change, no movement, is stagnation. Newton also warns against being carried along by what others think and do.

2. Clear Some (Head) Space: Mental clutter accumulates fast and obstructs and/or distracts focused thinking. F. Scott Fitzgerald once suggested that "the test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in mind at the same time and still retain the ability to function." That's two ideas, not several dozen. Whenever I need to clear my mind, I take a brisk walk or listen to Glenn Gould's performance Bach's Goldberg Variations.

3. Feed Your Mind: The human mind really does have a sponge-like capacity that can be increased substantially. I "feed" mine with what I learn from others' minds but, daily, I also concentrate on strengthening certain cognitive skills. Each human life is a work-in-progress, with attitudes and behavior guided by habits. Many people are mentally and/or spiritually anorexic.

4. Notice Things: We tend to see so much but notice so much less. Yogi Berra: "You can observe a lot by just watching."

5. Change Reality (...Don't Deny It): In other words, replace an unacceptable reality with one that is worthy of what you value, perhaps even cherish.

6. Have a Big Ego and a Small Ego: This is a paradox. Newton's comments remind me of Socrates' response when told that he was the wisest man in the world. "If so, it is because all I know is that I know nothing." Only someone with both a big ego and small ego could say that.

7. Know Your Weapon: The term "weapon" has several meanings. Newton's point is that we need to be able to attack but also to defend. Perhaps it is having highly developed inductive and deductive skills or it could be a refusal to remain silent during a moral crisis.

8. Travel Light: No excess mental "baggage." There is much to be said for following lean thinking principles that include constant pruning. What Ernest Hemingway once characterized as "a built-in, shock-proof crap detector" will also come in handy. You get the idea.

9. Twang: Somewhat similar to a "Eureka!" moment. Newton characterizes it as a "click." During more than 20 years of classroom teaching, I could see it in the eyes of certain students: they "got it" when others didn't.

Richard Newton provides in this "little book" an abundance of invaluable information, insights, and counsel (his and others') that can help many of those who read the book to "aim higher and go further than [they] ever thought possible." Yes, the material is remarkably informative but also very entertaining. I read it and then re-read it twice before embarking on the composition of this brief commentary. Each time I either learned something new or understood something better. Bravo!

About the Author
Sunil K. Parameswaran is a Professor of Finance at the T.A. Pai Management Institute in Manipal, where he anchors courses in the area of Finance. His primary areas of interest are Securities Markets, Financial Derivatives, Fixed Income Securities, International Finance, and Banking. For the past seven years Dr. Parameswaran has also been a corporate trainer and management consultant. He has delivered training programs on Global Securities Markets and Global Banking to many multinational IT firms located in India including WIPRO Technologies, HCL Technologies, MINDTREE Consulting; JPMorgan Chase, Soci�t� G�n�rale, ANZ Information Technology, and Kanbay (now a part of Cap Gemini). Dr. Parameswaran also has several years of teaching experience at leading business schools in the U.S., Singapore, Australia, and India.
Dr. Parameswaran obtained his Ph.D. in Finance from the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University in North Carolina, U.S.A. A Great Introduction to Financial Instruments

I recently got a copy of "Fundamentals of Financial Instruments - an Introduction to Stocks, Bonds, Foreign Exchange, and Derivatives" by Sunil Parameswaran. If you're looking for a high-level overview of various financial instruments to gain an understanding of financial markets today, this book provides just that. I was greatly impressed by the author's treatment of this subject, and I particularly enjoyed his writing style which takes a complex topic and explains it in easy to understand terms. It is exhaustive in its coverage, discussing stocks, bonds, futures and options, and the more complex derivatives, mortgage-backed securities and swaps.

The title pretty much sums up what to expect from the book - it does not assume that the reader has a finance background, only a curiosity to understand, in some depth, the topics covered in the financial news today. Chapter 1 provides an excellent summary of the various financial instruments, and then it builds from there. While the first part of the book can be an interesting introduction to a finance layman, it's also a valuable textbook for Finance students looking for a more in-depth discussion and mathematical treatment of various securities.

Beginners will find this book useful to build a strong understanding of the fundamentals, while those with prior exposure will find this a great way to get reintroduced to the subject before moving to more advanced books.

Overall, a book you definitely can use as a handy reference.

Complex made simple

I had the privilege of learning about the financial markets from Prof. Parameswaran at T.A.Pai Management Institute. I am now delighted to have the opportunity to be one of the first to read his latest contributions to financial literature.

"Fundamentals of Financial Instruments. Introduction to Stocks, Bonds, Foreign Exchange and Derivatives" published by Wiley Finance is an aptly titled book as the title says it all. It serves as a perfect primer to students who are taking those first steps into the financial markets. The book lays the ground with establishing the link between the economy and capital markets as well as underscoring the impact of monetary and fiscal policies that currently drive some of the largest economies of today. It builds on this foundation and runs through the gamut of securities from the basic ones such as equities to the most complex ones like MBS. Besides being a useful book for students of finance, it serves as an all in one, exhaustive reference for the working professional who can reach for it in lieu of a search in Google or Wikipedia for a quick catch-up. It would also come in handy to those taking the CFA Level II and the FRM exams as a source of additional material to augment that provided by the CFA Institute and GARP.

The second book "Futures and Options. Concepts and Applications" published by McGraw-Hill brings back memories of my second year at MBA when I took up a similarly titled course by Prof. Parameswaran. Simple language explains the market structure, purpose, pricing and valuation of derivative instruments. The book is replete with numerous worked out examples which would be a valuable asset to students and practitioners of finance. I would specially recommend this book to students of Financial Engineering as I believe that it would have been a powerful resource for me while I was studying for my Masters in Computational Finance.

Prof. Parameswaran's forte is his method of teaching complex subjects in a simple and easy to understand manner and that ideology flows through into these books. I encourage everyone to pick up his books and gain from the wealth of information and knowledge in them.

Well written, relevent and useful

This book is extremely well written and easy to read. It is useful to have all the major financial products covered in a single text. The concepts are adequately explained and the illustrations and examples are relevant and exhaustive. Based on my experiences both as a student and as a professional in New York, I feel that this book is a welcome addition to the existing inventory of works in this area and should be invaluable for both students as well as those working in the Financial Services industry. The author appears to have a gift for expressing complex issues in very simple terms and in my opinion this serves to distinguish this book from its competitors.
