Retro technology

To use this book the reader almost has to have an old 8086/8088 cpu computer to use the instruction set that this book uses to program drivers in DOS. I found an 8086 emulator on the internet but it doesn't accommodate Interrupt 17 for printer services, which the book uses for a whole chapter on creating printer drivers. The other option is to use TASM instead of MASM, but the book is all written in MASM. The book is more like a relic novelty than a learning tool because the technology to use it is all outdated. There are a few 8086/8088 pc's on ebay but they are all pretty pricey if they even work at all. TASM and MASM both call on the computer's BIOS to execute commands, so if an emulator doesn't have a BIOS it is handicapped and limited.

Great book written by a profesional engineer, not a scientist

This book covers most aspects of MS-DOS drivers.Actually, after reading the book i have now understood the structure of MS-DOS, how MS-DOS treats drivers and the differences between the different versions of MS-DOS.
I bought that book due to a project of a course on my university.I never compiled the actual driver i had to(a serial driver) but instead i wrote only the report (how the driver should be implemented and an assembly code, which i never compiled).So, this review covers only the theoretical view of the book, which i can reassure you that it is beyond your expectations.
It is also clear that the author of the book (Mr Lai) is not a scientist, but instead he is a very experienced and professional programmer, a real engineer who can understand anyone which, in fact, makes reading easier.
Probably the book is absolute nowadays but anyone who want to learn who device drivers work in MS-DOS i fully recommend it(actually i haven't found any other book with the same topic).

Should be the first device driver book you read...

This is an excellent book. Approaching device drivers via DOS is probably the best method to understanding device drivers in general. As to previous comments that the examples were written in assembly rather than C, this is a strength, not a weakness. Many drivers during the heyday of DOS were written in assembly. And while assembly is. admittedly, a difficult language in which to program, it does force you to stick your head into the hardware and keep it there (which is what device drivers are all about).
The only negative comment is that the book cannot be viewed on the Amazon website, particularly the table of contents and an excerpt.

“Two things and then I will leave you to your evening,” he said softly and I could see the anger flashing in his eyes. “First, I had no idea how much this job means to you and I didn’t realize my attention could be such a negative thing. I promise I will not bother you at work. I would hate to think I could jeopardize your future. Second, I am not trying to piss my father off by...what was it? ‘Showering my attention on a nobody like you’. I resent that you would even think of yourself in that light. I find I’m incredibly intrigued by you, Claire. I happen to think you are beautiful, funny, charming, completely refreshing and the more I get to know you the more I like you. I admire your drive and dedication and now that I know something of your background, I think I am in complete awe of you. I won’t interfere with your internship, but I would like to make you aware right now that I absolutely intend to pursue your attention outside of work.”

Good intro to the story, just wish subsequent novellas weren't priced so high.

I enjoyed the story and the characters, except for Drew's father who is a complete jerk. I was disappointed in how easily Drew gave in to him. I'm anxious to see what happens next, but the price is holding me back. While this book is currently free, each following novella is $2.99 a piece.

I cannot wait to read the next installments Drew and Claire's story is getting interesting. Hate that it's in parts but the story line sounds very promising.

I found as I read this that I didn't even care that it ended with a cliffhanger. I didn't care enough about any of the characters to even consider spending a penny to find out will happen in the next installment. I wouldn't even spend my time reading it if it was free.

Something to think about

Simple discussion of the brain, its parts, and its functions. Explains neurons and the spinal cord, too. For example, "Your brain may have as many as 100 billion (BIL-yuhn) neurons (NOO-rahnz) to do its work." Illustrations are functional, but the photos are good. How Does Your Brain Work?

I gave a short talk to my grandaughter's 1st grade class about the brain. I'm a pediatric neurologist, so I interspersed a few magic tricks, showed them a 3 dimensional model and as a bonus, gave each of the youngsters a copy of this booklet. It's appropriate for early grade-school kids, covers the basics and is colorful, with photos of kids, diagrams, etc. The only criticism came from my grandaughter who found the picture of an actual brain being held by two gloved hands "scary". Other kids liked the book, parents gave positive feedback, etc. about it.

This book is a great introduction to the brain. I read it to my child's first grade class and they loved it. It is perfect for kindergarten!

I've had a smoothie maker for awhile and thought it was about time I try it out.I discovered this book and luckly for me it was free at the time.
I have to admit that when I started reading it I thought "I only wanted to try some smoothie recipes."But after reading the book,i decided to try a detox and i've really enjoyed the journey. I am an APO Professional working in SAP APO environment for more than twelve years. It gives me immense pleasure to write in recommendation of this book considering the subject and practical approach demonstrated with examples in the demand planning.

The outcome of this book, originates with authors’ extensive subject competence gained through years in Information Technology and SAP Business Consulting world in conjunction with their Industry experience.
The book begins by discussing key aspects of SCM along with SCM solutions supporting an integrated supply chain management framework that improve supply chain performance. This book is awesome and recommend for anyone who wants to start career in APO - DP and good for everyone.

This book is awesome. In fact, it’s more than just a book as it’s bound to become my companion. This book certainly sets a benchmark as to how SAP APO DP should be communicated and implemented.
Authors have done a splendid work in bringing a fine balance of concepts, business rationale and the hands-on approach to learn as well as implement APO DP. The unique process flow diagram is mind blowing that consolidates the entire DP. I have never come across such innovations in book. The diligent and detailed methods in which the screen shots are explained are equally great. This book also sets a very wonderful context of SCM, SAP SCM, SAP APO where DP fits in. Overall the book is full of business examples, diagrams, step-by-step screen shots and a holistic approach in APO DP.
I am more than sure to derive repeat value out of this book.
This book not only has the potential to create APO DP professionals but also will enrich the knowledge of existing APO DP professionals.
I am looking forward to purchase their sequel book, as well.

There is no excuse for drops sticking in bottles when corked, this should not occur, if it does, the fault is in the making; the water has a great deal to do with causing the candies to be sticky.

The Candy Makers Guide a collection of recipes for sugar boiling

this book gives great information on how to make candies through sugar boiling, such as taffy if you don't get the temperature right it will be too hard or too soft. Its easy to understand and gives easy step by step instructions, and side items to help you understand.I really cant wait to try out the recipes.

Info is pretty old and outdated, and focuses more on commercial candy making and the equipment (all outdated now, I'm sure) needed to make it. If you're interested in that kind of thing, it might be good reading, but if you're looking to make candy at home, you might want to look elsewhere...
