From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2–While the piggies in the original nursery rhyme number only five, this tale does not end with the unfortunate one who went wee, wee, wee/all the way home. Instead, the imaginative Harris duo envision a new, fun-filled scene and delight readers with the news that Fifth little piggy went,/'We, we, we…/We STILL aren't done!' The premise of this rhyming counting book is that 20 pigs have been invited to a picnic. Using all modes of transportation, the porcine guests arrive bearing treats, talents, and paraphernalia. What they don't notice is the infamous wolf straight out of The Three Little Pigs. True to form, he craves pork chops and seems destined to have his meal-until he stops to count only 19 porkers. Greed makes him the victim of a stampede when the 20th one, who has been napping, rings the dinner bell. Hilarious color cartoon illustrations show pigs with plenty of personality, each prominently displaying a number while that same number is hidden somewhere on the spread, along with the sneaky wolf. In the spirit of Margie Palatini's Piggie Pie! (Clarion, 1995), this funny story is perfect for one-on-one and group sharing.–Gloria Koster, West School, New Canaan, CT

What a fun book...
By Book Critic
This book starts as a clever twist on the "this little piggie.." childrens rhyme and turns into a fun counting book with a humorous ending. This is a book that both kids and adults can enjoy. The illustrations are great as well and they contain some fun surprises for especially observant children. Highly recommended.

Both of my kids (age 2 and 5) LOVE this book and want to read it practically every day. It is really cute and they love pointing out where the big bad wolf is hiding on every page. The big bad wolf is certainly a character and they find it very amusing!

Funny counting book
By Petricia A. Parham-Sharp
The Big, Bad Wolf wants to eat all 20 piggies, but they surprise him in the end! Good book for kids learning to count beyond 10, and still high interest for my 5yr old. She likes to find where the wolf is hiding on every page.

The ability to perform a wide variety of practical procedures safely and competently is essential for any doctor involved in the practice of anesthesia and intensive care. Junior doctors especially are now called upon to gain competence in many invasive practical procedures in an increasingly short space of time, whilst also understanding the theory behind them.

This highly practical book is the only guide needed to the procedures and techniques commonly used in anesthesia and critical care medicine. Step-by-step, it clearly explains each technique and procedure, enabling the reader to fully understand how and why they are performed. Full colour photographs illustrate each technique, and every chapter covers the same essential information: definition, indications, contraindications, complications, equipment, sites, and technique, for ease of use.

This book will be used by all junior trainees in anesthesia, along with junior doctors from other specialities working in intensive care units. It will also be useful to any senior anesthetist who wishes to update or refresh their knowledge, as well as anyone working in the emergency ward who performs any of these procedures.

Review
Nothing beats practice and experienced guidance, but this text is an aide memoire I am glad to have found. British Journal of Hospital Medicine I can thoroughly recommend this book. It should be available in all departments of anaesthesia and critical care as a handy and rapid reference for anaesthetists beginning their training or before carrying out an invasive procedure. Anaesthesia I enjoyed reading through this handbook size, soft cover book...I believe amny anaesthetic and critical care trainess will purchase a copy of the book and it will be a popular choice for departmental libraries. It should also be of interest to other acute medical and surgical trainees, plus other critical care and theatre staff. The writing style and clear illustrations make this book very easy to read. The organisation of the chapters and the size of the book make it an excellent reference text which can be taken to work... It is also a valuable resource for the FRCA examinations. In Over Our Heads: The Mental Demands of Modern Life, by Robert Kegan

If contemporary culture were a school, with all the tasks and expectations meted out by modern life as its curriculum, would anyone graduate? In the spirit of a sympathetic teacher, Robert Kegan guides us through this tricky curriculum, assessing the fit between its complex demands and our mental capacities, and showing what happens when we find ourselves, as we so often do, in over our heads. In this dazzling intellectual tour, he completely reintroduces us to the psychological landscape of our private and public lives.

A decade ago in The Evolving Self, Kegan presented a dynamic view of the development of human consciousness. Here he applies this widely acclaimed theory to the mental complexity of adulthood. As parents and partners, employees and bosses, citizens and leaders, we constantly confront a bewildering array of expectations, prescriptions, claims, and demands, as well as an equally confusing assortment of expert opinions that tell us what each of these roles entails. Surveying the disparate expert “literatures,” which normally take no account of each other, Kegan brings them together to reveal, for the first time, what these many demands have in common. Our frequent frustration in trying to meet these complex and often conflicting claims results, he shows us, from a mismatch between the way we ordinarily know the world and the way we are unwittingly expected to understand it.

In Over Our Heads provides us entirely fresh perspectives on a number of cultural controversies―the “abstinence vs. safe sex” debate, the diversity movement, communication across genders, the meaning of postmodernism. What emerges in these pages is a theory of evolving ways of knowing that allows us to view adult development much as we view child development, as an open-ended process born of the dynamic interaction of cultural demands and emerging mental capabilities. If our culture is to be a good “school,” as Kegan suggests, it must offer, along with a challenging curriculum, the guidance and support that we clearly need to master this course―a need that this lucid and richly argued book begins to meet.

Review
A stimulating tour through the modern mind in society… In Over Our Heads is full of insight; it reflects broad learning and enormous intellectual effort. (David Mehegan Boston Sunday Globe)

[This book] is intellectually exciting and far-reaching in its implications… Kegan’s writing has much to offer developmental psychology, which suffers from a dearth of theoretical frameworks in the area of adult development… This book invites readers to work hard but rewards them greatly. There are foundation-shaking theoretical and research challenges here for mainstream psychology, especially behavioral and social learning approaches that focus on skill training and cumulative (quantitative) change… I thoroughly recommend this exciting book… It has the potential to transform our texts on life span development. It is a book that opens up whole new vistas for developmental researchers, as well as psychologists whose practice includes adult clients. (Marie R. Joyce Contemporary Psychology)

A dazzling intellectual tour… In Over Our Heads provides us with entirely fresh perspectives on a number of cultural controversies―the ‘abstinence vs. safe sex’ debate, the diversity movement, communication across genders, the meaning of postmodernism. (Health and Recovery)

How Do You Think?
By Marcy L. Thompson
I was amazed by this book. I was reading it when we left for a two-day driving trip. Even though I am unable to read in a moving car, I kept it near at hand to read whenever we stopped at a rest area or gas station. It was so compelling that when I finished it, I immediately tossed it back near the top of my to-read pile. The second time through, I found that it had just as much to offer (if not more) as it had the first time.
Every once in awhile, I run across a book that helps me reorganize the way I think about the world. This is such a book. Through the use of examples and detailed examination of various aspects of modern life, Kegan considers what kinds of demands the world puts on us for thinking and relating. He makes a very solid case that cognitive development does not end after one passes through the developmental stages of childhood and adolescence (magical, concrete and abstract).
By carefully considering what it is exactly that we ask adolescents to do in making the transition from concrete to abstract cognition, Kegan sets the groundwork for a careful explantion of what the next order of thought is, what it looks like, and how the modern world demands that we master it. he looks in detail at just what we ask from adults in the areas of parenting, partnering, work, dealing with differnce, healing and learning. In each case, he shows that the modern world is set up so that people thrive best if they can use what he calls a fourth-order way of relating to the world, other people, and oneself.
This book helped me understand observations that had puzzled me, and suggests ways in which adult education theories (which generally drive me crazy) need to be expanded to explain what really happens when adults come together to learn.
One very interesting thing about this book is that Kegan is able to report on research studies that support his theory. Probably the most important thing this book does is to provide a framework for considering people in the context of how they individually construct the world and their relationship to it, which allows me to judge whether a person is authentic, courageuos or generous on his own terms, not on mine.

An Incredible Book
By disco75
This tour-de-force does much to explain how people's interactions are affected by their developmental stage and goes a long way toward fleshing out adult developmental theories. It hypothesizes that mental development is intricately entwined with world view and one's understanding of events and roles. It explains relations between romantic partners, family members, communities, and cultures. Kegan's hypotheses are informed, but not limited, by existing psychological frameworks. He is like a sociologist in his outlook and a psychologist in his theorizing. He writes about sophisticated ideas and complex topics in a clear and approachable way. His conception of mental development is not easy to grasp in its entirety but pondering it is well worth the effort. The book is one of the best written in the last 20 years in any field.

Kegan is in over my head...
By Chad Oberholtzer
I will begin by simply admitting that of all the books that I have read in my life, this was one of the most laborious for me to finish. The first several chapters were rather grueling, I settled into things a bit in the middle, and the end was downright painful. I am not conceited enough to think that no book should ever be written that might challenge my mind, but I am also not some sort of mental misfit.

My frustration centers around the fact that Kegan's writing was so dense. Some of his sentences were whole paragraphs long, with multiple parenthetical phrases. I realize that Kegan is an intellectual giant and works in academia, but it seems to me that his greatest weakness (and the most significant barrier that prevents his ideas from reaching a broader audience) is his inability (or refusal, whichever the case may be) to write in a more accessible style. He mentioned in his Prologue that he apparently received considerable criticism about his earlier book, "The Evolving Self," for its inaccessibility. If "In Over Our Heads" is an improvement, I shudder to think about reading its predecessor.

Of course, I'm not suggesting that Kegan doesn't have some helpful things to say. In fact, the overarching premise of the book (that modern life demands adults to process on a fourth level of consciousness, which is all too rare and leaves many people struggling to keep their heads above water) is solid and makes sense. And the anecdotes and stories that he includes are helpful in clarifying his points. But I just didn't think it was worth the effort to try to wade through his writing style. I'm sure that many social scientists have been captivated by this book, but for the general population, only the rarest of readers will find Kegan sufficiently engaging to endure this beast. I'm glad that I got through it, but I'm hard-pressed to recommend it to others.

Proscriptive without being restrictive
By Bunyyup
In "Analysis without Paralysis," Bensoussan and Fleisher present an even dozen methods for conducting analysis for businesses that lead to results and not to endless "paralysis by analysis."

I really liked this book! It was well written and is a great resource if you are working in the consumer products world. I came at this as a general process analyst, operations research type guy.

The book is very well written and edited. The style is conversational. You could imagine being in an interactive meeting with Bensoussan and Fleisher as you read the book.

The first two chapters describe the role of analysis in business and the generic analysis process respectively. At first blush, I was not keen on the generic chapters, but it did provide a framework for the reader to compare the dozen in-depth analysis techniques described in the rest of the book.

Each analysis technique chapter begins with a description and purpose section that quickly tells you if this is a technique that you want to invest more time reading about or trying to apply. Then, the chapter goes through a more or less detailed description of the process and products associated with the technique. Each chapter concludes with Endnotes for further reading, and that was very helpful.

One caveat is in order, this book is exactly what it claims to be, a business resource. If you work in the social world or non-profit sector, many of the techniques will still be useful, but you will have to do some significant translation. That is not a bad thing, but it is an important point from an expectation standpoint.

The authors also did not treat all analysis techniques as being equal. They spent considerably more pages on Growth/Share Portfolio analysis, Five Forces Analysis, and Financial Statement analysis than the other areas. Growth/Share can be applied to the non-profit sector in an abstract way as can Five Forces Analysis. Financial Statement analysis is not so helpful if you are using societal good or utility as your drivers rather than dollars and cents.

Product Lifecycle analysis was presented in a survey form, and you have to stretch a bit to use it in a service industry. It is even more of an abstraction if you want to use these techniques in a non-profit setting.

Some of the more useful techniques for the government and non-profit worlds, e.g., SWOT analysis, were more survey chapters than detailed looks.

All in all, this is a good book for any manager responsible for process development or execution, and it is a great book if you work in the consumer products world.

Great intermediate level resource for strategic analysis in business
By Todd I. Stark
I found this a very good intermediate level book on strategic analysis for business. The tools are well chosen and diverse, the format explains the use and rationale of each tool very well, and the examples are contemporary, relevant, interesting, and relatively easy to follow. This is intermediate level because it does require some general understanding of markets, business processes, and analytic techniques, but the techniques and the level of explanation in this book are still suitable to people who are not professional analysts. That is, I think any experienced upper level manager should be able to pick up this book and understand and begin to use at least most of these techniques in their own business with a little study and effort even if they have never used them before.

This book also stands out among business books in providing a brief but solid grounding in the origin and theory of each technique, followup reading, and both the strengths and teh weaknesses of each technique, rather than just presenting examples and case studies. I think this book is a great resource for any reflective business strategist. The biggest caveat I would raise about this book is that it is focused very specifically on general business strategy, that is, navigating markets and finding better ways to allocate resources across business units in order to be more profitable. It would be difficult to apply most of this information to other kinds of analysis or strategy.

Best primer on Business Analysis tools without having an MBA
By Amazon Customer
Great book to learn a diverse set of tools for business. The authors took a pretty boring, academic and hard to grasp subject and made it enjoyable. Complex models, such as BGC Portfolio Matrix and Porter's Five Forces Industry Analysis, are clearly explained. The strengths and weaknesses of each tool are explained, along with a method of how to complete the tool. Each tool was well illustrated and contained a case study to see a practical application of the tool.

I found the strongest chapters were on Financial Statement Analysis, SWOT, and Win/Loss Analysis. Even if you don't have to do much analysis for your business you need to know how to read financial statements. SWOT and Win/Loss analysis are needed for everyone - and this book avoids the superficial treatment and use of those tools. The book points out for example that SWOT analysis s supposed to flesh out strategic opportunities in contrast to the organizational capabilities - not be a "why they should buy from us" spin tool as it is usually used for.

The book has a large gap - how to research and quantify much of the data needed to do analytical work. Some tools, for example, you have to develop and rank various criteria. This book offers no quantifiable method for doing that ranking - making the results subjective and arbitrary, the very things analysis is supposed to eliminate or at least minimize. Understandably this book isn't about research methods but without explaining how to get good inputs none of theses tools will be effective. Most tools require accurate and in-depth information on markets and competitors. How do you get that data? Other tools require establishing various outcomes and criteria to be studied. How is that done in a way that doesn't lend itself to the analyst's biases or spin? You won't find those answers here. To perform a credible analysis you will need to get a better resource that fleshes out the method and gives you empirical methods of developing, sorting, and ranking input data.

That said, I haven't found a better book that puts together a wide assortment of business analytical tools and explains them sufficiently to know when and where to use each. With a companion book on how to do competitive/market research, this will be an invaluable and often used resource on my bookshelf.

Gay Novels of Britain, Ireland and the Commonwealth, 1881-1981: A Reader's Guide, by Drewey Wayne Gunn

A Library Journal Best Reference

While American gay fiction has received considerable scholarly attention, little has been given to developments in other English-speaking countries. This survey catalogs 254 novels and novellas by some 173 British, Irish and Commonwealth authors in which gay and bisexual male characters play a major role. Arranged chronologically from the appearance of the first gay protagonist in 1881, to works from the onset of the AIDS epidemic in 1981, in-depth entries discuss each book's publication history, plot and significance for the construct of gay identity, along with a brief biography of its author. Including iconic works like Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray (1890) and E.M. Forster's Maurice, as well as lesser known but noteworthy novels such as Rose Macaulay's The Lee Shore (1912) and John Broderick's The Waking of Willie Ryan (1969), this volume--the first of its kind--enlarges our understanding of the development of gay fiction and provides an essential reading list.

Why Men Don't Listen and Women Can't Read Maps: How We're Different and What to Do About It, by Allan Pease, Barbara Pease

Have you ever wished your partner came with an instruction booklet? This international bestseller is the answer to all the things you've ever wondered about the opposite sex.

For their controversial new book on the differences between the way men and women think and communicate, Barbara and Allan Pease spent three years traveling around the world, collecting the dramatic findings of new research on the brain, investigating evolutionary biology, analyzing psychologists, studying social changes, and annoying the locals.

The result is a sometimes shocking, always illuminating, and frequently hilarious look at where the battle line is drawn between the sexes, why it was drawn, and how to cross it. Read this book and understand--at last!--why men never listen, why women can't read maps, and why learning each other's secrets means you'll never have to say sorry again.

Amazon.com Review
Ever wonder why women can brush their teeth while walking and talking on various subjects while men generally find this very difficult to do? Why 99 percent of all patents are registered by men? Why stressed women talk? Why so many husbands hate shopping? According to Barbara and Allan Pease, science now confirms that "the way our brains are wired and the hormones pulsing through our bodies are the two factors that largely dictate, long before we are born, how we will think and behave. Our instincts are simply our genes determining how our bodies will behave in given sets of circumstances." That's right: socialization, politics, or upbringing aside, men and women have profound brain differences and are intrinsically inclined to act in distinct--and consequently frustrating--ways.

The premises behind Why Men Don't Listen and Women Can't Read Maps is that all too often, these differences get in the way of fulfilling relationships and that understanding our basic urges can lead to greater self-awareness and improved relations between the sexes. The Peases spent three years researching their book--traveling the globe, talking to experts, and studying the cutting-edge research of ethnologists, psychologists, biologists, and neuroscientists--yet their work does not read a bit like "hard science." In fact, the authors go to considerable lengths to point out that their book is intended to be funny, interesting, and easy to read; in short, this is a book whose primary purpose is to talk about "average men and women, that is, how most men and women behave most of the time, in most situations, and for most of the past."

Why Men Don't Listen, therefore, deals largely in generalizations, and this is bound to alienate some readers. "We don't beat around the bush with suppositions or politically correct clichs," the Peases claim. Those up for an irreverent and unapologetic take on why men and women just can't help themselves sometimes may just decide to read on. --Svenja Soldovieri

From Publishers Weekly
"To get a man to listen, give him advance notice and provide an agenda," write the husband and wife Peases in this pithy, attention-grabbing guidebook to the differences between men and women. Originally self-published in Australia to wide acclaim, the book weaves together facts from the latest brain research, theories from evolutionary biology and a treasure trove of anecdotal events and conversations collected by the authors during a three-year research trip around the world. Sociobiology has rarely been so entertaining. The Peases say that a woman's brain is wired to be able to speak and listen simultaneously, for example, and they are geared to talk through problems. Men, by contrast, need to clam up. "He uses his right brain to try to solve his problems or find solutions, and he stops using his left brain to listen or speak." These brain differences took shape in cave days, according to the authors. Men were hunters and defenders who evolved tunnel vision (as compared to women's vision), while, as nurturers, women not only had broad peripheral vision but sensitive relationship skills. Channel surfing and newspaper skimming are modern ways for a man to cut off from others to privately mull problems, advise the authors. "Remember, his forefathers spent more than a million years sitting expressionless on a rock surveying the horizon, so this comes naturally to him.... " Feisty and crystal clear, this controversial work will appeal to readers of both sexes. (May)

From Library Journal
Someday, there may be a book based on evolutionary psychology that lightheartedly attempts to explain the differences between men and women; this isn't it. Barbara, CEO of Pease Training International, which produces videos and seminars for businesses and governments, and Allan, a professional speaker, assert that the "politically correct" will lambaste their work, which is based on interviews with experts and seminars. Quite rightly so. While there is a need to publicize research on the evolutionary differences between men and women, there is absolutely no need to couch the research in offensive stereotypes while trying to be funny. For example, the authors use the tired clich? of a woman with PMS hurling cookware at her spouse to illustrate that testosterone equals spatial ability. They also allege that a "woman with a moustache is...much more likely to make a better engineer than one who looks like a Barbie doll." In addition, quite a few of the statistics are suspectAe.g., the authors allege that 110 percent of engineers are men. Public libraries should stick with Deborah Tannen's work and John Gray's Mars/Venus series.APam Matthews, Gettysburg Coll. Lib., PA

Irreverant and insightful. And fun.
By Ken Wells
This book was refreshingly 'politically incorrect' with gender generalizations. The combination if their own 'toungue and cheek' narrative AND some emerging science of the brains was a real page turner.

The greatest reward was learning some things about how the brains work and why we look 'stupid' to each other by accident. However, the man's language part of thr brain and mind, simply isn't capable of keeping up with two people talking. We men get irritated trying, and we LOOK like we are simply being intollerant for no good reason while everyone else is having a great time.

Such as. Women are perfectly capapble of several people talking at once while having a great time.

An very interesting book.
By M. S Worthington
I've just read through all the reviews and I've noticed one thing. The people who don't like the book clearly haven't read it properly or got what the author is saying.

There was only one bad review I agreed with at all, and that was the gentleman who pointed out that, even though the book is written by a couple, the emphasis does seem a little more female oriented at times.

However, the majority of the bad reviews are entitled "I'm a woman and I can read maps" or such like. Please don't let this put you off buying the book. The authors state quite clearly in the opening chapters of the book that the information represents an overall picture and that the science is based on what is the case MOST of the time, not ALL of the time. They do tell you quite regularly that there are exceptions.

There is also a test early on in the book to show the probable levels of male hormone you received in the womb. I have done this test with a fair number of people now and it is amazingly accurate. I'm guessing that many of the negative reviews come from people who didn't bother to do this test, which would then make much of the book seem like nonsense.

As I have already said, and think needs saying again, this book is what is generally the case, not what is always the case. Taken in that light, and also taking into account that the authors also say at the start of the book that many will dismiss it on a number of reasons which they list (and every negative reviewer bar the one I agreed with comes somewhere on the list), it really doesn't pay to listen to the negative comments.

This book is not trying to enforce negative stereotypes. Far from it. This book suggests many ways in which certain character traits can be much better understood. For certain chapters where it explains things such as why men tend to sleep around more, it also clearly states that the authors do not believe this makes the behaviour more acceptable, and they actually state that "luckily" there are ways of changing in built natural behavior. I have just read one part of the book that actually says this out right, that the biological instict is not always the best thing to follow in a modern society.

Basically, the negative reviews are from people who had made up their mind before they had even read the book, or who did not want to believe what they saw.

My last point is to the reviewer who claimed that phrases such as "research now shows" mean nothing. There are plenty of facts that do state where the research comes from, and had every single fact been backed up by when, where and who did the reasearch, the book would probably be very hard to read (there would be references on every other line practically), and probably about twice the size!

Buy this book, read the first chapters carefully so you fully understand where the authors are coming from and what they are trying to achieve, and then enjoy the rest.

A fun read - don't take it too seriously!
By David Rasquinha
As with any book that tries to explain the differences between men and women, this book is replete with generalizations. Once you accept that the statements made refer to probabilities that apply to the majority of subjects, but certainly not all persons, the various points start to add up. In the old genetics vs. environment debate, the Peases suggest that the hormones which govern our gender also define the pathways in which we perceive reality, pursue relationships and solve problems. Somewhat similar to the earlier 'Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus", this is a useful look at human behavior that might just reduce the number of male-female battles! For all the authors' claimed research however, this is just a light hearted book that can be enjoyed with profit. Do not expect any scientific breakthroughs, but you can certainly get a better understanding of both your own behavior and the mysterious behavior of the opposite sex, (whichever that may be)! Just read it with an open mind and have fun - don't take it too seriously!

Hobbled online reference.
By Forrest Ritland
Elsevier, in collaboration with Inkling, has crippled online access to this reference. Until February, 2014, Elsevier's ExpertConsultBook online reference books have been fantastic - easy to navigate, intuitive to search across your titles, and efficient to use. Elsevier has shut that down and replaced it with Inkling's clumsy e-book reader. Easy to read. Not easy to use as online reference to find answers to particular diagnostic problems.

With ExpertConsult/Inkling you can no longer search across your purchased books at one go. You have to open and search within each book individually. Open your online book and you get three columns: a navigation column with list of chapters, a reading column, and a notes column (wasting valuable screen space). You have to click the search icon to get a text entry box. Search results then replace the index in the navigation column, 10 at a time, 4-5 visible on a typical computer screen. To review your search results you have to scroll down through the first 10, then click next, then scroll down through the next 10, then click next, ten at a time. The contexts of individual search results are obscure. It shows a little text where your search term appears, but not which chapter or section it is in. Figures (often lots of them) are included in your results list. Individual search results are headed with figure number (not caption, not chapter or section heading) or sub-section titles. Even in the reading pane you can't see chapter and section titles, so you don't know what part of the book you're in. You are limited to linear access through the book - with links to previous and next sections at the top and bottom of the reading pane. To get to the next sub-section you have to scroll down to the bottom of the current sub-section. In order to navigate the index to different chapters or sections you have to exit your search results to get back the index pane.

Very nice comprehensive reivew
By Odyssey
I am not big on writing reviews; however, this book deserves a comment. The chapters are very well written and takes you in depth with every disease. I like the lymphoid neoplasms chapters little more than myeloid. They are written better than the WHO and enable you to understand the background and the classifications in depth. The only draw back I would say is sometime I feel it contains a lot of academic nonsense; but I must say it is limited to a few number of pages. Good review to use before during your fellowship and may be a bench review during sign-out. The online version of the book is excellent. Overall, it is worth buying it.
