About the Author
Michael Wilkinson has forty years of experience in teaching neuroscience and neuroendocrinology to undergraduate and graduate students as a Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and IWK Health Centre, Dalhousie University, Halifax, Canada. His research laboratory has focused on neurodevelopmental aspects of female reproduction with a specific interest in the neuroendocrine regulation of hypothalamic function, including the impact of sex hormones on sleep.

Richard E. Brown is a University Research Professor in the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience at Dalhousie University. He has taught courses on hormones and behavior, measuring behavior and the neurobiology of learning and memory for more than thirty-five years. His research is on mouse models of Alzheimer's disease, Fragile X Syndrome, ADHD and other neurological disorders. He is currently examining the age-related hormonal changes in transgenic Alzheimer's mice.

*Starred Review* For the first 40 pages or so, Berry's latest novel about the Kentucky farming community called, by its inhabitants as well as the author, the Port William membership, seems more of same. A good same, for few write American English more limpidly than Berry, and he has realized his characters as thoroughly as Faulkner did any of the people of Yoknapatawpha County. But as this telling of a farm woman's life in her voice continues--and voice it seems more than writing, so spontaneously speechlike are its cadences and the simple accuracy of its diction--it feels ever more poetic. Not gnomic and surrealist, like prose poetry, but flowing and long breathed, like epic poetry. Of course, the story it tells is epical, that of a heroine who expresses, in her living and doing, the essence of her people. Its character is domestic rather than martial; though, since its time span includes World War II, its trials include the MIA disappearance of Hannah's first husband and the ghastly combat experience of her second, Nathan Coulter, which Hannah learns of with any precision only after his death a half-century later. If its domesticity is more often happy and fulfilling, though, the cultural movement--the short, precipitate, ill-informed, poorly considered demise of the American family farm--over which Hannah's beautiful and heartbreaking story arches is as tragic as any war. A Story of a Farming Community - Becomes More Dramatic in the Last Quarter

I was three quarters of the way through this book before it started to become really meaningful to me. I cried towards the end. I can never give a book less than four stars if it makes me laugh or cry. But most of the book was a bit too dry for me and not detailed enough. I thought that I'd become immersed in the farm life, that I would learn about what a day in the life of Hannah Coulter was like. But other than a paragraph that listed the various chores Hannah performed, her life on the farm didn't really come to life. I felt emotionally distant from all the characters for much of the book, and then in the last quarter I felt myself become attached to the characters. Before that last quarter there was so little conflict in the story. World War II seemed to be the worst thing that happened, and then it was as though Port William was sort of a Utopian existence. There was a sense of community. I can't remember any conflicts until the last quarter and then the grown children and grandchildren stir things up a bit. Also, we get to hear more about Hannah's and Nathan's marriage which was so typical of so many marriages, mine included. The fights that blow over. The fact that husband and wife recognize that they're angry but can hardly remember what they're fighting about. If I were a reader who was prone to underlining and highlighting I would have done this in the last quarter of the book. Berry really seems to understand the complexities of marriage as well as the difficulties of having grown children and grandchildren who become distant from you both geographically and emotionally. If there would have been a bit more depth shown in their community life--if we could have become aware of challenges they had in the group dynamic, then I think this would have been a more complete story. For three quarters of the book I wasn't feeling an emotional connection. I was just saying to myself--these are nice people--they seem to get along well. But where's the drama here? Is there anything that is going to touch me deeply? And I'm thankful that eventually the story did resonate with me. Took a while, though.

Fictional memoir

I enjoyed great chunks of this book though occasionally felt it went around in circles a little. The writing is deceptively simple, and profound. The sense of people and place is strong. It's barely a novel, much more a fictional memoir. Nevertheless it moves the reader considerably, and is able to present a great breadth of time within its relatively few pages.
At times you crave a bit more dialogue (because when the dialogue does come it's superb) and sometimes a little more action of some sort (any sort) wouldn't have gone amiss. But the warmth of relationships, the detail of character and the wonderful feeling for what humanity is are all worth patiently reading through.
I could have done without the details of Nathan's probable experience of the war; it comes very late in the book (even though we've been forewarned of it from the beginning), and seems to jar against the book's poise. It doesn't contribute greatly to the story, except I suppose to show that this man had such integrity he was able to hold all this inside him and not poison others with it.

An elegy for the simple, natural life we once led

Hannah Coulter, a high-school graduate coming from a rural mid-western background, has a remarkable gift for complex philosophical thinking and analysis of unwelcome modern trends. Like all Wendell Berry's writing, this book, too, beautifully displays his melodic, evocative prose. His characters are fully rounded and developed. I wish I knew my friends and neighbors as well. "Hannah Coulter" provides an elegy for the simpler life we once led in the mid-twentieth century, for the respect for nature and true love for the land. Berry illustrates the harshness and damage done by our increasingly corporate life, its nefarious effects upon farming in this country, upon small villages and upon the individuals who live there. Hannah's children, though raised on the farm, all leave and become almost unintelligible to her. The boy who truly loved the simple farming life ends up in agribusiness. The book ends on a happier note: the grandson who had wandered off into drug culture and the "wild life" returns home at last to run the farm in the old-fashioned way.

About the Author
Robert L. Kelly began collecting arrowheads in farmers' fields when he was 10 years old. He has participated in archaeological research since 1973, when he was a sophomore in high school. He has worked on excavations in North and South America and conducted ethnographic research in Madagascar. He currently is conducting research into the archaeology of Wyoming's Bighorn and Absaroka Mountains, and Glacier National Park. A former president of the Society for American Archaeology and current editor of American Antiquity, Kelly has published over 100 articles and books, including The Foraging Spectrum: Diversity in Hunting and Gathering Societies (1995) and The Lifeways of Hunter-Gatherers (2013). Dr. Kelly has been a professor at the University of Wyoming since 1997.

David Hurst Thomas has served as curator of anthropology at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City since 1972. A specialist in Native American archaeology, Thomas discovered both Gatecliff Shelter (Nevada) and the lost 16th- and 17th-century Franciscan mission Santa Catalina de Guale on St. Catherine's Island, Georgia. He has led the long-term excavation of Mission San Marcos near Santa Fe (New Mexico) and recently returned to St. Catherine's Island for long-term archaeological exploration. A founding trustee of the National Museum of the American Indian at the Smithsonian since 1989, Thomas has published extensively. His works include 100 papers and 30 books -- most recently, the bestselling Skull Wars: Kennewick Man, Archaeology, and The Battle for Native American Identity. Archaeologist Thomas likes "old stuff," including his 1961 Corvette, his 130-year-old house, and the Oakland Raiders.

The book is a magazine style college book. The magazine style seemed weird at first but has actually been easy to carry & I've enjoyed reading it more than some of my other books because of the format. The information is good and a very basic introduction to Archaeology.

Take a chance to be fascinated by biochemistry

I am 4� semester medical student and ever since I was introduced to this book (about a year ago by my biochemistry class teacher), it has proved to be a very useful biochemistry information resource. I have other biochemistry texts because I like to study from different points of view, but this text is a little bit different from the basic biochemistry textbook in that the information presented here is most relevant to the clinical setting. After reading any chapter it will be clear to you that you made a good investment. The most important thing is that the book is written in a very understandable reading wiht many examples and illustrations. The chapter on metabolic interrelationships will proof of great value to understanding biochemistry as a fundamental discipline in medicine; in a sense it opened my eyes (and yours too) to what at first seems a boring subject.
If you are thinking that because the book is presented in a clinical way you'll loose basic information, don't be. I took the chance and believe me I am not dissapointed at all, otherwise I wouldn't be recommending it to you. Good luck.

THE GREAT BOOK FOR BIOCHEMIST.

I have a copy of this book for my biochemistry as well as molecular biology class. It becomes my tool to understand many complicated materials. The good part of this book is that there is not only one or two authors of this book, but, I guess, more than 20 contributors to this edition. The experts in each field are more likely to present the material more accurate than others. Moreover, this book also provides the address as well as e-mail address of each contributor in the content which I think very helpful when I need more advise on a specific topic. Hence, this book is one of my favorite texts.

About the Author

James B. Campbell is Professor of Geography at Virginia Tech, where he teaches remote sensing, quantitative methods, and geomorphology. He has worked closely with students and faculty in related fields such as forestry, geology, agronomy, environmental sciences, and planning. Since 1997 he has served as Codirector of Virginia Tech’s Center for Environmental Applications of Remote Sensing (CEARS). The author of numerous technical articles and several books, Dr. Campbell has received the Outstanding Service Award and the Fellow Award of the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing. He is also a recipient of the Outstanding Service Medal awarded by the Remote Sensing Specialty Group of the Association of American Geographers. Dr. Campbell has been active in the AmericaView Program, including service as a principal investigator for the VirginiaView consortium and as a member and chair of the AmericaView Board of Directors. � Randolph H. Wynne is Professor in the Forest Resources and Environmental Conservation Department at Virginia Tech. He also serves as Remote Sensing Team Leader for the Forest Productivity Cooperative, Associate Director of the Conservation Management Institute, and Codirector of CEARS. He teaches courses in forest photogrammetry and spatial data processing and remote sensing of natural resources. Dr. Wynne’s research interests are in the applications of remote sensing to forestry, natural resource management, ecology, ecosystem services, and earth system science.

Comprehensive and readable

Organization and writing style of this text are both excellent. Campbell's explanations of technical details are understandable and complete. Readers should know this is an "all about" book and not a "how to" book with a limited discussion of software used in remote sensing applications.

Solid book that covers the basics for remote sensing students

This book covers all of the basics as well as some advanced material so I'd highly recommend it for any student serious about remote sensing. The diagrams/pics were very helpful and it was a great supplement to my lecture.

Simply the best!

The information in this publication brings a depth and breadth of knowledge unsurpassed. It will elevate any [GEOINT] analysts' level of understanding and knowledge of the world of Remote Sensing, to include GI&S. I highly recommend purchasing this book and making it the center of your analytical trade craft references and professional readings. I rented the book, but will be purchasing it for my library - it is that good.

Leah is wilder than I thought.

Oh my gosh! Boy did Leah have a "Reckless Rendezvous", ha! Ryan's kiss really flipped her out. When she reacquainted herself with Logan she really wanted him to erase her memory of Ryan, but everywhere she turned she saw his face. Even when Cole, Logan's friend wanted to help out it still didn't work. Meanwhile, her couple of days away from the band, she was bombarded with phone calls and texts. The Reckless Band boys needed her back. She left Las Vegas to go to New York in more turmoil in herself than she had when she arrived there. Things between Ryan and herself are getting harder for her to ignore.
I can't wait to see who cracks first in Ryan's story, him or Leah. They are destined for each other, but how they figure it out will be an amazing story to read!

I adore this series so very much! Eden Summers has written a series that has provided me with endless laughs, steamy fantasies, hiccup cries, and an obscene amount of joy! This novella is just a little slice of the Reckless group. A short moment of time with their band manager, Leah. She is featured in each of the past books. I've "stood" on the sidelines and witnessed her heartache and love for Rhythm Guitarist, Ryan.

I totally understood Leah's need to run. To separate herself from the pain of not being able to have Ryan. It was hard "watching" Leah turn to another man to console her battered heart and to let loose and enjoy some sexy times. I'm not gonna lie, I struggled with that. As much as I knew deep down that she needed it, it was still hard. She wasn't doing anything wrong but I knew where her heart was. Leah needed to find something for herself. Even if it was just a single moment of happiness, oblivion even.

Leah kept coming back to Ryan in her mind and heart. They have to be together! Jesus...even the thought of that not happening makes me sad. Yes, I know...fictional characters and all that. But I've followed these characters through so many trials and tribulations. I know them. They just have to be together. Eden Summers knows how to wreck me. Each book in this series shreds me. But holy hell, she puts me back together with such beauty that I can hardly stand it.

This novella isn't a stand alone. I highly recommend you start from book one, Blind Attraction. There are so many facets to Leah and Ryan, and you get a bit more of an intimate view with
each story. Just enough of a glimpse to infuriate you, intrigue you, and keep you coming back for more! When it ended, I was sad. Though I shouldn't have been. I knew it wasn't the end of their journey. Ms. Summers has set this story arc up to be her most intense in the series. I see big snotty ugly cries when I finally get my greedy paws on the upcoming full length novel. Leah and Ryan will get their complete story. I'm ready to go on that wild and emotionally charged journey with them!

I can't get enough....

I can’t even begin to tell you how much this story needed to be told! Since the beginning of the Reckless Beat series, Leah has been a favorite of mine. I’ve become a tad protective of her and I want her to have her happily ever after. She deserves it more than anyone. The constant **** she puts up with in her career and with the drama of the band, she needs to catch a break. And in RECKLESS RENDEZVOUS, she catches a break, and then some…

Let me start off with, this isn’t a romance, BUT this does set the tone for the LOVE STORY that we have ALL been waiting for. We all know who Leah loves, but a girl has GOT to blow off some steam, especially in her profession. It was all getting to her. So, instead of creating more drama by diving head first back into her work, she takes a much-needed, albeit short and sexy, hiatus. No more band members. No more pining after a man she can’t have. No more lovely couples fawning over each other. It’s just her and one OR two gorgeous men who knows what she wants, knows what she needs, and has NO problem giving it to her with absolutely NO STRINGS ATTACHED. I’m not gonna lie, **** gets real! This has some of the most erotic scenes that I have ever read from this author. It’s OFF THE WALLS hot! I’m blushing just thinking about it, and it takes A LOT for me to blush.

One night of pure passion leads to more thinking and then to a revelation. Leah needs to re-evaluate her life. Her work is tearing her down. She is alive, but she needs to start LIVING. If things were different, she could fall for her sexy piercer, but the night they shared, showed her how much she misses the people she truly loves. Get ready for one quick read that packs on Hell of an emotional punch! Thank you Eden Summers, for allowing Leah to have a night of total surrender. Now, the fun truly begins. Bring on the conclusion of the AMAZING Reckless Beat series!

Lager's book is a remarkable gift to the pre-retirement community. Forget the fixed concept pie charts and ignore media hype! Read this book and get the tools required to enjoy greater, more confident independence in making your 401K investment decisions.

Ric Lager instructs us effectively about the real inner workings of the retirement industry. He presents examples and strategies that work for pros and novices alike. He teaches us how to most effectively navigate the often rocky waters of today's marketplace.

Lager's unsinkable retirement boat is constructed based on the Point and Figure methodology. It is motored by the concepts of Bullish Percents, Sector Analysis, and Relative Strength. He teaches us to become our own boat captains, while offering tips about selecting a first-mate/advisor as needed. He explores tax benefits and updates about laws and regulations to promote smooth sailing.

Lager explains why and when to buy, sell and hold. He shows us how to act without emotion by using unbiased, time-tested tools. In short, Lager's guide is the quintessential 401K bible.

Contrary to what most of us believe, Ric Lager shows step-by-step how to achieve high rewards with lower risks in our retirement accounts. Risk management often seems an esoteric subject, but Ric presents the concept in concise, easy-to-understand language that even the most inexperienced investor can grasp quickly. His 118-page book is not a textbook, but rather a series of simple concepts that the holder of a 401(k) account or an individual retirement account can enthusiastically put to use even before finishing the book.

The book will get you slapping yourself on the forehead and laughing at the same time. You'll both understand and question long-held concepts such as "portfolio re-balancing", "diversification", "average returns", "buy-and-hold", "Lifestyle and Lifecycle mutual funds", and my favorite, the "pie chart". As Ric shows, the concept of using a computer-generated pie chart to increase stock market performance or to reduce stock market risk simply doesn't work ... not today, not ever.

I know you've heard and heeded the advice of professional financial advisors that use all of the terms mentioned above. How do I know? I was one. So my recommendation today is to turn off the television, put aside those out-of-date financial magazines, and sit down with this great book. Your retirement can be painful or pleasurable depending on the decisions you make today ... your choice.

As Fredrik begins the trial, the pharmaceutical company begins placing increasing demands on him to continue taking the drug so he can provide them with the data they need.As Fredrik and Marianna learn to live with psychiatric illness, they begin to share a unique view of the world as their journey leads them to the rebirth of infinite possibilities they never could have imagined.

Omar Metwally lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan and is a medical student at the University of Michigan Medical School. His writing conveys the experience of psychiatric illness and the self-discovery it ultimately brings. Omar has spent considerable time traveling through and working in Scandinavian countries.

With the opening phrase of this quote from Thoreau new young write Omar Metwally brings his first novel into a realm rarely traveled by other authors. FREDRIK'S WINTER: A NOVEL ABOUT LOVE, MENTAL ILLNESS, AND REBIRTH is a rather auspicious debut, a book unafraid to tackle the realm of psychiatric conditions such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder and weave them into a story that finds a metaphor in the seasonal changes of the northern countries of Scandinavia. A medical student at the University of Michigan and a frequent traveler to the strangely different days of light versus darkness that make the Scandinavian seasons so unique, Metwally writes with considerable first hand information, a fact that both enhances and detracts from his writing.

The stories intertwined tightly in this tense novel are really manifestations of the manner in which the minds of victims of mental illness perceive and make sense of this world. We meet Fredrik (a medical student form Copenhagen) and Marianna (a Finnish art student) and the Norse-like psychiatrist Dr. Anlauf. Fredrik suffers from bipolar disorder and is plagued by nightly recurring nightmare of his own suicide, His sessions with Dr. Anlauf suggest that Fredrik's failure to cope with his disorder are due to his life style and eventually Fredrik decides to travel to Iceland to purify his mind. He meets Marianna who suffers from schizophrenia and these two mentally injured youths discover the histories of their real and created lives. The manner in which these characters interact and discover the realm of life after death (with all the double entendres that discussion implies) forms the conclusion of the story, coincidentally as written by the medical student/writer Fredrik cum Metwally!

Metwally finds poetry in prose in his fluid style of writing: 'They wrote about a force called mania that characterizes the Scandinavian seasons and drove humans to their most beautiful and most desperate extremes. In his manias, Fredrik saw his thoughts float ever faster in his mind, and he frantically picked them from hi mind like ripe fruits lest they fall to the ground and decorated his paper with their colors, lest they evaporate away into nothingness.' 'A soul is like a flaming comet, soaring through the dark cosmos, pulled and pushed by the gravity of its encounters with celestial bodies, until it finally disintegrates and burns out.'

Metwally writes with a sensitive knowledge and understanding of reincarnation, of the world as perceived by the mentally ill, and the workings of the treated and untreated mind of those afflicted with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. He also manages to transport the reader to the beauties of the seasons of the northern countries - especially the majesty of Midsummer night. For this reader, the author's use of complex medical information is distracting from the poetic flow of his writing: for example, he finds the need to list generic names of medications (even for marijuana!) and the methodology of performing an autopsy in such detail that we become aware of an eager medical student writing a first book proving he knows his material rather an author who respects his reader and the barricades such dollops of information place in the telling of a story. And another problem in this book is the obvious editing flaws that stop the eye, so blatant are these missed errors in printing.

But Omar Metwally is a writer this reader will follow. He has the grace of a poet and the grasp of the line between life and death and the aftermath of each that makes him a writer of great promise. Grady Harp, May 09

Phenomenal

I have read a lot of books that explore the depths of the human mind, but I've never been affected as much as I was after reading Fredrik's Winter. This book gives an honest and raw description of the realities of living with bipolar disorder, allowing the reader to instantly connect and sympathize easily with the protagonist. For a short novel, it tackles many themes not touched on often in fictional literature. I read the book cover to cover in one day, and I would highly recommend the book to anyone!!
