Good for NP students too

I wanted a book for clinicals (and class) to help with determining differential diagnosis. This book (referring to 2nd Ed.) gives the practitioner questions to ask the patient (and yourself while thinking about diff. dx.) as well as possible diagnostic tests to order.
Plenty of room for your own notes as well.
I find it useful and worth buying. Small enough for bookbag or clinical bag.

About the Author
Wong Kiew Kit has practiced and taught Shaolin kung fu, chi kung, and meditation for more than 30 years and has over 2,000 students. He is the fourth generation successor of monk Jiang Nan of the Shaolin Monastery and Grandmaster of Shaolin Wahnam Kung Fu and Chi Kung Institute. Great General Overview

This is a great backgrounder on the subject of Shaolin Kung Fu and on how to recognize and zero in on your own approach to learning and training. Don't expect it to be annotated reference work, but rather a general history and exposition, which is quite a lot for any book on a topic as vast as Shaolin Kung Fu. Historical exactitude is not always the order of the day as you read this, but generally speaking, it reflects the veteran Chinese understanding of Shaolin, which is way better than you would typically get otherwise, plus a reasonably accurate historical view, nonetheless. Not utterly engrossing 100% of the time, but more like 80%, which is still very good.

As this book attempts to demonstrate, Shaolin Kung Fu is deceptively deep and complex in an unraveling, level-by-level way. For some, it is too deep, or too physical, or too hard (as opposed to too soft), and so it's good to look into it a bit before plunging into all that sweat and mabu hurt and aching shins. Part of the problem with taking up something as difficult as Shaolin is that the levels may not really seem to make sense to you. That is why you need a good understanding of what you expect to get out of it. Schools have two dimensions: 1) making money, and 2) teaching a life-enriching martial art. No school can focus on just one, so if the school/teacher strikes a good balance, this is often the best sign.

For anyone contemplating taking up Shaolin, start here amidst your kwoon window shopping phase. And take comfort in the fact that Shaolin encompasses so much of probably everything you ever liked about martial arts in the first place, within its own bottomless, broad curriculum. This is due to the "martial arts college" nature of the Temple throughout it's long history. Also understand that Shaolin is an excellent starting place for most any martial arts study, no matter where you eventually may end up. All martial arts, while they were not always invented at Shaolin Temple per se--some Indian fighting arts actually predate the Shaolin Temple, just as Shaolin Kung Fu's "founder" Da Mo was himself an Indian Buddhist monk--nontheless, all were at least most probably preserved by the Temple monks, as well as honed and perfected there over time. Most Chinese martial arts (and thus Japanese and Korean) thus tend to owe the Temple due as their mother in some sense or another. Certainly everything the West understands to be "martials arts" was shaped or preshaped there into what it currently is today. This book goes into quaint legends and explications of how and why kung fu survived the way it has, thanks to the Shaolin Temple's supervision and care.

This book is an excellent introduction to the whole kung fu world.
The main focus is, as the title states, on the "Shaolin kung fu" style but also people interested in all the other styles will find this book a goldmine of valuable information.
The material presented in the book spans the history of martial arts in china, the differences and similarities among the various styles, carefully describes the basic stances and patterns of Shaolin Kung Fu (enough to get started on your own, althogh having an instructor is always a wise choice!) and also simple yet very effective chi kung exercises for developing and "feeling" internal energy.
In summary, if you are curious about the exciting world of kung fu and are looking for an excellent introduction, you can't go wrong with this book!

Im still reading through it, its a great manual for beginners in kung fu so far. The drawings are pretty accurate and easy to analyze.I'd suggest to anybody that wants to learn the history and mindset of Kung Fu as well as the basics of the many styles, and practicable acts of the art.

Me, LinkedIn and Josh Turner's Book

I have this to say about Josh Turner's "How to Create a Step-by-Step LinkedIn Marketing Strategy for Your Business" - he gave me the destinations, but did not give me the road maps.

In terms of what can be done on LinkedIn to optimize the returns from your presence, speaking in a business context, Josh is clear on the activities that count. I have been reading up considerably on LinkedIn in recent days, and I am reasonably sure he did not miss out on anything (it is possible, that as a LinkedIn expert, he left out a few "trade secrets" and loopholes that he did not want everyone exploiting). In terms of how exactly to undertake those activities, i.e., the nitty-gritties, Josh leaves you wanting more.

Perhaps that was because of his need to keep the book to a reasonable page count.

Conclusion: I am glad I read this book. Yes, it was worth it. Hopefully he will write a sequel.

If you are brand new to Linked in this book tells you where to look but not very much else. It took 15 mins to read so as a very basic starting point it is fine, but you will need more detail to actually get things going with linked in.

Very helpful when used with the book, not useful on it's own.

This cd allows you to hear the examples of Macedonian that are marked in the book it supplements. The actual recording is not of high quality, and the tracks seem to run into each other, but not bad enough to outweigh the help it provides as a supplement to the the book it was designed to accompany. The quality of the audio sounds like a recording someone did with a tape recorder in their own home. If not used with the book it would be worthless though unless you already know Macedonian, there is no English translation of the tracks, just a person reading the examples of Macedonian from the book. The book, by the way must be purchased separately. It is extremely helpful in spite of it's faults when used how it was design to be used, hence the four stars.

Better than nothing

For someone who's trying to learn Macedonian by themselves in a non-classroom setting, this is quite inadequate. Ideally, you'd have the amount of audio drills that something like an FSI or DLI course would have, but it's only two CDs, so I wasn't expecting the ideal. However, this didn't even meet my low expectations. These CDs contain only a few dialogues and a handful of exercises, in audio CD format--if they had used mp3s, a lot more material could have been included. Most egregiously, the vocabulary lists aren't even included, so you can't learn correct pronunciation of the vast majority of the core vocabulary in the book. But, if you're trying to learn on your own, I guess you're stuck with this. It's better than nothing.

RARE CD to go with book - have had book for quite a few years and could not find CD. FINALLY! Here it is! Overpriced, but I am sure it doesn't have a huge market, so... I swallowed hard and took the price on the chin.

Deming's work is a 5 star ... this ... not so much

I suppose I could be labeled a purist, but I think in this case it's being more realistic. I've been a Deming disciple since reading Out of the Crisis. I also had the opportunity to attend one of his sessions as a young supervisor. Make no mistake, I am a huge fan of Deming. Much more than any other management/business reading material, Out of the Crisis had the biggest impact on my personal style of leading and managing.

That said, I had a lot of trouble with this book. By her own admission in the preface, the book was edited with a "heavier hand." Orsini goes on to state "the book contains very few complete articles." As a result, I found this book to ramble. The thoughts struck me as disjointed and the flow was awkward between articles. In the Kindle edition, the index takes up 15% of the book.

My suggestion is to read the original work of W Edwards Deming. Start with Out of the Crisis and grow from there ...

You will want to have this book in your library, because with this book Dr. Joyce Nilsson Orsini has given us a great gift. She has provided us with previously unpublished or little known excerpts of the writings and presentations of Dr. W. Edwards Deming.

Via its wide-ranging topics THE ESSENTIAL DEMING provides an excellent bridge to the next level of Deming's insights; we get to look up from our daily work and see the bigger picture. Much to this reader's delight, it is an enlivening picture.

Dr. Deming, of course, changed the world. Changed the way the business, industrial, and service delivery worlds thought about -and achieved quality. But the revolution in quality was only one of Deming's contributions. He also pioneered statistical methods. And, late in his life, he developed a method by which organizations could be managed for greater effectiveness, efficiency, quality, and humaneness. "Create pride and joy in work," is one of his most famous sayings.

Deming's insights on improved ways of managing for success are compelling--and most people don't know they exist. In this book Deming/Orsini provide specific and clarifying statements about the specific attributes of a manager. And just as with other of Deming's insights, organizations that apply the management teachings as soon as they can will gain competitive advantage and leap ahead.

The Essential Deming

This book is a captivating collection of writings and speeches which covers the broad spectrum of Deming's expertise and knowledge. It includes letters to corporate CEOs about how to bring quality into their companies, and articles about business, quality, education, consumers, marketing, management, statistics, knowledge and systems. Some of the ideas expressed are conveyed in Deming's earlier books; however, there is plenty of additional and new material to warrant a thorough read of this book. One speech talks about the blandness of stories in books for children, so much so that children go to sleep reading them. Orsini adds fascinating insight into many of the entries with comments about the context and circumstance under which the papers appeared. This is a must read for anyone serious about business and management.

His Song is also failing and the Cultists are rising. The Church is manipulating away and Duncan is trying to save the Empire. The Wild Hunt is being set loose........

Exciting and fast-paced, this story has a tightly woven plot, vivid descriptions, and strong characters. You feel as though you're there and seeing what the characters are seeing. It's easy to get caught up in the story and I'm waiting with bated breath for book 3 of The Wild Hunt. Requiring a lot of concentration to remember events, as the story shifts between different people and perspectives, this can be read as a standalone. I bet you'll be hooked and need the next in the series though, especially after the cliff hanger ending.

Borrowed too blatantly from the Wheel of Time

Readers should know that parts of this book are written in parallel with the first book of the series (the same events told from another character's perspective).

I also found it distracting how much of this book was borrowed from Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series. Cooper made many changes in the elements she borrowed, but the specific details she kept were enough to jar me out of the story while I was reading it. For instance, she brought the Aiel into the story, complete with their history and a Wise One in each band. She sometimes also uses the same imagery as Jordan to describe use of the power. This isn't a problem if you haven't read the Wheel of Time, and I think Cooper does a good job of borrowing while making significant changes and making these elements her own.

On a final note, Elspeth Cooper uses a predilection for rough sex as a trait to vilify the bad guys. Way to perpetuate sex negativity.

Not a bad book two, but not an exceptional one

Elspeth Cooper in is book two of her series, The Wild Hunt, and “Trinity Rising” (Tor, $25.99, 488 pages), and not surprisingly, there’s no synopsis, and even worse, no map. Cooper constantly refers to geography, and her characters are wildly scattered on a pre-industrial world with magic, but the effort to sort out who is where and how close they are to someone else is not only frustrating, but unnecessary.

And Cooper is a relative newcomer to the writing biz, so she doesn’t quite have the finesse of other veterans, especially when it comes to villains. (A quality villain is the key to any good-vs.-evil tale, as “Trinity Rising” is, and making the villain more than just a cardboard cutout who tears the wings off of flies just for the fun of it is a lot harder than creating a sympathetic and believable hero.)

Still, The Wild Hunt is a promising series, and with two more books to go, Cooper should become more and more assured – and maybe even will include a map.
