Mitchell had been a fisherman until an accident cost him a hand; when Pyle met him, he and his sons were building a vessel for inter-island trade. Starting first as an observer, then as a helper, Pyle finally became one of the family, working on the new sloop each day and taking meals with Mitchell and his sons. Their lifelong friendship is a central theme of Clean, Sweet Wind.

But this is more than a lyrical evocation of a place and time. In his years among the islands Pyle collected information on all the different boat types sailing at the time. The second half of the book is a journey from Trinidad to the Virgin Islands, with a look at each type.

Clean, Sweet Wind captures Antillean speech, beliefs, and hospitality with as faithful an accuracy as it renders the graceful designs of Caribbean boats. The result is both a detailed study of traditional watercraft and one of the finest regional narratives yet written.

About the Author
Accident put Douglas Pyle in the position to write the story of the boatbuilders and boatbuilding in the island chain of the Lesser Antilles. After finishing his Master's degree and teaching at a college for a year, he went to England to buy a sailboat. He sailed Eider, a lovely 1939 Robart Clark sloop, back across the Atlantic, fetching up in the Virgin Islands in 1968. Short of cash and liking the place, he took a job teaching in St. Croix. He had intended to end his tropical sojourn at summer's end, but curiosity and a strong admiration for local wooden boats and their makers held him. This interest led to his five-year study of the boats and lives of Caribbean islanders and, ultimately, to Clean, Sweet Wind. Today Douglas Pyle is a rancher; he resides in Oklahoma with his wife Nancy Fowler Pyle.

A fine study of a disappearing craft

I first encountered this book on my first trip to the Grenadines in the early eighties when local boatbuilding was still practiced in the harbor at Bequia. Times are changing, even in the islands and though the building of local work boats still goes on, its heyday has passed. Although it has been a generation since it was written, it's good to see an old friend back in print. It is a fine tribute to local human ingenuity and creativity.

Well-written account of a fascinating subject

I love this book, and I haven't even finished it yet. I'll admit I'm biased, as I know the Grenadines well and have long been fascinated with the traditional watercraft. But anyone can appreciate the way Pyle develops his story, with a low-key humour that bubbles through the text. Good pics too. The chapter on whaling is fascinating. Straight out of Moby Dick! A thoroughly good read.

Well written, mildly technical but eminently readable

The book gave me back, in clear, concise and unsentimental prose, the feel and ambiance of the Eastern Caribbean, taking me back nostalgically and effortlessly to Carriacou. Although mildly technical in parts, the book is well constructed and written. An interesting sequel would be an account of the observations of a latter-day visit by Pyle to the Lesser Antilles -- the islands have changed so much since the timeframe of the book. It's puzzling how the author was able to put the Caribbean behind him in order to take up cattle ranching inland in the United States, never to return to the Eastern Caribbean. But I guess that's just as odd as the fact that I'm writing this message in Zimbabwe, where I live -- also just about as landlocked as one can get!

No DVD

DVD would not work in my DVD player which is able to play blu-ray as well as DVD so I don't know what that's all about. Must be old technology that made the DVD for this program. As for the audio....if you're in sales, political negotiations or thinking of becoming a professional poker player or international banker, I would think the information might be of benefit, or even if you're concerned about the hidden motivations of someone in your orbit who you're not feeling quite sure of this material might help you to get a clearer picture of who you're dealing with. Good for anyone who wishes to study human behaviour.

Exhausted from reading this the entire night instead of sleeping.

I stumbled on the Graveyard Queen a few weeks ago and read through the entire series in two days and quickly pre-ordered The Sinner. It was a happy surprise to see it on my Kindle, as I totally forgot ordering it (that's how quickly I hit the pre-order button).

I enjoy the main character and appreciate a heroine that is down-to-earth, independent, and makes adult decisions. If I had one negative thing to say, I found her moaning over Devlin to get a bit repetitive, though I do like the two as a couple.

The plot of each of these books is unique, refreshing, and original with enough twists and turns to keep you intrigued. The graveyard symbolism in all of these books is fascinating and I was particularly interested in the description of the mortsafes in this book.

I love the fantasy genre in general and it can be really hard to find books that have a new concept and don't feel a lot like every other book in the genre - this one is a total gem.

She did it again.

Someone already said it that The Graveyard Queen series is totally addictive. I have all the ebooks and also the fantastic audio versions. I usually steer clear from this genre, because i have trouble sleeping afterwords. The Restorer however, sucked me in before i realized how truly creepy it would get. By then it was too late...i was pulled to the other side ; ) I got through the first four books and the prequel in 5 days and had to wait about a month for The Sinner. It was an agony ; ) When i finally got it i didnt start reading it for a few days because the pleasure would end all too soon. Then i will be desolate again, waiting till next year for the last book. I already show signs of withdrawal so i would probably read the whole series again ; ) Now...The Sinner...i dont know how she does it, but this one is possibly the creepiest one of the whole series. Dark and sinister it wraps you up in a chilling embrace and holds you there to the stunning conclusion. It made me so paranoid that i could hear evil chanting every time i was alone in the house ; ) I cant wait for the last book. For those who enjoy audiobooks i warmly recommend the audio version, the narrator is absolutely fantastic.

Superb Author!

Loved, and read, all of Amanda's books. She is one terrific writer. I have especially enjoyed The Graveyard Queen series, and have just finished The Sinner. She tells a story within a story. She's straight-forward, never "ghoulish" in her descriptions. You can almost feel her pain over her "gift," which is both blessing and curse. If ever there were a "care-giver," it's "Amelia Gray," a wonderful and reverent cemetery restorer!

Professor J.R. Leigh was educated at Cambridge and London Universities, where he gained higher degrees in both control engineering and pure mathematics. He has worked in both small and large industrial organisations on the development and application of control systems. In his current appointment at the Polytechnic of Central London, his interests are concerned with control theory, computer-aided design and industrial applications. These interests are well supported by consultancies on novel control applications. He has published or co-authored over 100 research papers and several books, including Essentials of Nonlinear Control Theory, Modelling and Simulation and Temperature Measurement and Control. His current research includes work on the control of biotechnological systems and in this field he has recently edited the book Modelling and Control of Fermentation Processes. He is a Fellow of both the Institution of Engineering and Technology and the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, and a Member of the London Mathematical Society.
