Vampire's Shade (1 of series)

I downloaded Vampire's Shade as a free book from Amazon. I had a love-hate relationship with this read. Part of it due to the cover which makes no sense with the plot-- what's with those wings and holey tights?

For some reason, Adele's personality, speech, and sayings reminded me of other young, vampire-slayer characters-- all attitude and self-reflection. I'll admit, I enjoyed the plot, and secondary characters, even if I found the protagonists unremarkable. The story was well-paced, and thoughtful. I think my dislike is the cookie-cutter heroine-- a compilation of other, similar vampire-slayers. I can't say I was too impressed with Connor, either. Nor did I ever really get a sense of the attraction between the two. Their relationship seemed contrived, rather than a natural progression of events.

There's a lot of potential here, and I'm willing to bet this is a series that will improve as the writer hits her stride with the characters.

New Editor Makes All the Difference

If I chose books based on cover photos, I'd never have downloaded Vampire's Shade. Could it be any cheesier? It looks like they're trying to hook hormonal high school boys.

This story is riddled with errors, more than I've seen in a long time, which is a real shame. I found myself constantly backtracking to try to deduce the author's meaning because of odd phrasing (ex: "It hadn't been a hell of a job, and there'd always been a little torn."), missing words and punctuation, and misused words. Clearly, this book wasn't edited before publication and it shows. Errors show up on every other page. Some people don't care about this stuff, and don't even notice it. It was a real problem for me. 2 stars as is.

For content only, Vampire's Shade deserves 3.5 stars, perhaps 4 stars. The story is involving and the characters were interesting. Parts of the plot could have been fleshed out more. We got only bare details about Connor's illegal business or why the master vampires wanted it. Since that was pivotal, more about that would have been helpful.

Neas may not be Jeaniene Frost or Laurell K. Hamilton, but her writing is very promising. I really hope she finds a good editor. I'd love to revise my review after editing.

p.s. I just looked at the listing, and amazingly, this book lists an editor. Unbelievable. They should be fired. And she should demand a refund.

ETA 6-8-16: I was just notified that this was re-edited, so I downloaded it again to take another look. What a difference a good editor makes! In the first chapter, I only noticed one misspelled word, one or two missing words, and one slightly awkward turn of phrase. Trust me, that's nothing compared to the original release. The story now has the polish it deserves, and it flows like it should. If you have the original, download the new one and compare. It's impressive.

3.5 stars, rounded up to 4, because hey, the author responded and acted. Thanks on behalf of all of us.

What's a dead vampire or two.

There were a lot of mistakes in this book and some sentences were completely baffling with wording, some words were missing or spelled wrong and it was really hard to figure out what the author meant. The story itself was very interesting and intriguing so overall I thought it was a really great book if you can overlook the mistakes. I hope that someone proof reads the next book as I think Vivienne Neas has a talent for writing. I always give first time writers second chances especially when I see greatness to entertain readers like this author.

Very convenient to have the electronic copy of this book. Great documentation of stories commonly told when i was a kid. They somehow elevate my understanding and interest about ancestors of these beautiful atolls, how they live back then, and the significance of each and every myth and their connections - from the story of Nareau, the tree of Samoa, Te Uekera, half people half spirits (anti ma aomata). Recommendable to perhaps scholars from Kiribati, like me - a bunch of things you'll learn in this book - the mwaneaba, canoe, weather and local navigation, the culture from birth to death, the connection that might be traceable between each and every myth, interesting maps and pictures originally drawn when technology is nonexistence, among others. The author Arthur Grimble (who is a Resident Commissioner for many years in Kiribati, and a respected anthropologist) and the later contribution of his daughter (Rosemary Grimble) has made this book meaningful, educational, and one that earns my respect and gratitude, for the stories that were told verbally when I was a kid, are not mere stories..they do gave hints and patterns, and i think therefore that understanding the current cannot be made isolated with understanding these great historical patterns and definitions.

Get this book...

This is one of the best Thanksgiving books I have read. I got it for my 5 year old daughter to learn from (we homeschool) and then I ended up reading it to my entire family (my parents, grandparents, brothers and sister in laws, niece) after we ate our Thanksgiving dinner this year. Everyone was fascinated by some of the things we learned from it that we had not known before and it was nice for all of us to sit around the table after we ate and enjoy it together.

A wonderful history of Thanksgiving

I am very pleased with my purchase. I gave several of these great little books to the children at church. I told them to skip over the part where it states that it was not a religious Holiday back then. The reason being that the Settlers were very religious and the Indians were too in their own way. So anything they did, they did mindful of God's provision, including this feast. I base my opinion on other books I have read on the traditions of both the Settlers and the Indians that would differ with the conclusion that it wasn't a religious feast. As you read on, you will see that this little book actually agrees with my stated opinion and that short particular statement really should have been worded differently or left out completely.

Excellent Educational Thanksgiving Book

This may be the best children's book about Thanksgiving I have come across. Though it is minimally illustrated, (But very nicely), the author does a terrific job in not just unwavering any and all questions about the real Thanksgiving, but also does an excellent job explaining the various answers. And they are all composed in a way that most youngin's will well understand, and learn something from. And one last thing that come by too often in children's books. This one is a bargain for the present price they are asking for it. You won't find a better more entertaining book for both kids and adults for the price... Highly recommended... : )

Clinical look at students

This book is used in my Masters of Higher Education Student Affairs program. The book is has insightful outlook about today's college students; however, its very dry and clinical to read. This book was used in conjunction with "Generation on a Tightrope" by Diane R. Dean which reads more as a story. I recommend using both of these books to grasp a better overview of college students.

Orientedness is what Orientedness does

I read recently a critique of Jason where someone versed in some functional langauge I hadn't heard of waxed lyrically of how you can define the Belief/Desire/Intention model in their langauge of choice and touch� to Jason. Well, I could put the same argument up as I actually coded a prolog interpreter in the programming language FORTH. The thing is, the problem with Orientedness.

Java, for example, falls short of being fully object oriented - don't argue with me, do your reading. You can use the Event model in Java - no one waxes about Java being Event-Oriented. You can even do Agent programming in Java (see JACK and JADE et al). The problem again, no claim that Java is Agent Oriented.

Now the thing with my FORTH based Logic-Oriented impersonation of Prolog was FORTH was the grandfather of DSL generators - so the code read with something of Logic-Orientedness. Agents in Java, and indeed in obscure functional langauges, do not display as a first class attribute the Agent-Orientedness that underlies their implementation. In fact, the argument that you have to learn an obscure functional language and then understand Agent-Orientedness as obfiscated by the functional code seems to have little to no sway.

JACK and JADE too obfiscates the Agent-Orientedness in imperative behaviours mascarading as object orientedness.

To the point then, to grasp the Agent-Oriented approach a DSL goes a long way - AgentSpeak is that DSL.

This book thus goes a long way to bedding the reader down in the core concepts of Agent-Orientedness.

I did buy this book with some reservations because of the dearth of information around about Jason programming BUT was pleasantly surprised at the detail in this book and suggest that it will pass as a survey text on the subject.
