BEYOND a certain vogue, as I remember, for ''Bonjour Tristesse'' and Albert Camus, a pious regard for Proust and Flaubert, and an occasional attempt at something almost-English, like the fussy, Gothic work of Michel Tournier, Americans on the whole do not get on with the French novel, and certainly not with the French experimental writers with whom Marguerite Duras is most often linked. It is true that in much of her work, Miss Duras uses obscurity - or at least manner and formal control - to combat or disguise her tendency to be melodramatic and sentimental. But in her small, perfect, new novel, she has found in reworking material she has used before - material evidently full of personal meaning - a felicitous and masterly balance between formalism and powerful emotional effect. ''The Lover,'' in this fine translation by Barbara Bray, is accessible the way Thomas Mann's ''Death in Venice'' or D. M. Thomas's ''White Hotel'' are accessible, both because of the interesting narrative particulars - one might say the surface of the works - and because they deal successfully with strong basic themes of erotic love and death.

The story is told by a narrator, now in her 60's, whose life resembles in some details Miss Duras's own. She is looking back on an episode of her adolescence and its emotional consequences on her life since. She describes herself now as ''ravaged,'' emotionally dead, and it is because of the intensity with which she felt then, at her initiation into sexual love when she was 15 1/2, a high-school student in Indochina. She was picked up by a rich young Chinese man in his limousine and went with him to his apartment, where he became her lover. She went with him every day.

This is in Saigon, where Miss Duras was born and grew up. The narrator's French family is bound in poverty and unhappiness, the father dead, an older brother whom she fears, a younger whom she loves, a mother whom she loves, pities and dislikes. The mother and brothers know and do not know of her affair, her disgrace. It is never acknowledged or discussed. Sometimes the lover takes them all to dinner:

''My brothers gorge themselves without saying a word to him. They don't look at him either. They can't. They're incapable of it. . . . He, the first couple of times, plunges in and tries to tell the story of his adventures in Paris, but in vain. It's as if he hadn't spoken, as if nobody had heard.''

The lover and the girl singlemindedly indulge their passion, described in language characteristically both lurid and flat: ''I used to watch what he did with me, how he used me, and I'd never thought anyone could act like that, he acted beyond my hope and in accordance with my body's destiny.'' As in many of her other works such as ''Moderato Cantabile'' or ''The Ravishing of Lol Stein,'' Miss Duras's female protagonist is a dreamlike slave of love, sexual almost against her will, driven by desire but also passive, and it is her passivity and desire that compel the male. To him she is a treasured object, a captive, possessed and imprisoned. There is no doubt these are archetypes of female sexual fantasy. But perhaps only the fantasies of women of a certain age? M OREOVER, the lover is Oriental (as in her well-known screenplay for the film ''Hiroshima Mon Amour''). That is, he is exotic and forbidden, the more attractive for being forbidden. (It seems that interracial passion in literature in English has usually meant that the woman was Oriental - and it was a long time before anyone went beyond ''Eurasian.'') In any case, to go with such a man is emblematic of sin and rebellion. Like Mr. Rochester or Heathcliff, he is rich, dark, mysterious. His car is a mythic black limousine: ''Yes, it's the big funeral car that's in my books. It's a Morris Leon-Bollee. The black Lancia at the French embassy in Calcutta hasn't yet made its entrance on the literary scene.'' His potency is dependable and she is always desired - he is the perfect dream lover, and this is all the very stuff of romance.

The Kreutzer Sonata (Russian: Крейцерова соната, Kreitzerova Sonata) is a novella by Leo Tolstoy, named after Beethoven's Kreutzer Sonata. The novella was published in 1889, and was promptly censored by the Russian authorities. The work is an argument for the ideal of sexual abstinence and an in-depth first-person description of jealous rage. The main character, Pozdnyshev, relates the events leading up to his killing his wife; in his analysis, the root cause for the deed were the "animal excesses" and "swinish connection" governing the relation between the sexes.

The hypocrisy of marriage

In this avant grade novella, Tolstoy rants against marriage as it existed in late 19th century in Russia. His diatribe is applicable--in some marriages--in other countries and other times, including the U.S. at present. Contrary to some critics, I did not find it sexist. Men even more than women take the blame for extramarital affairs and other misdeeds. Men do not come across, at least to this reader, as intellectually superior to women.

The story is told by a man who can't tolerate his wife to strangers on a train. His diatribe seems to go on forever (that's why only four stars), although there's usually a new twist. I won't reveal the ending.

I love the book

Make no mistake, I love the book, but this translation is total rubbish. It completely alters the source material in ways that make ZERO sense. This isn't a word to word thing either; the structures of paragraphs are altered at the translators whim. I would say this is abridged edition of Kreutzer's Sonata, were it not for the fact that the changes made during translation make Tolstoy's points even less clear. The only plus is that it is free. If you are reading this for a class or for any other serious reasons, buy a real translation. You owe it to both yourself and Tolstoy.

Easy to Understand

this book is probably one of the first books that actually speaks English! In other words, it is very easy to understand, it does not lose you in translation. I found this book to be very interesting, not only because it uses alot of lay terms, but because the examples it uses are very every day examples, and easy to relate to when trying to put the information all together.

Got this book because I needed it for class. I actually took the class with Dr, McConnel, the author of the book. Unfortunately the book as uncountable errors in it. Talked to Dr. McConnell the author and my professor about the errors in it, hopefully he'll have them fixed in the next edition.

Excellent text. Very readable and interesting. I learn something new every time I read through it. Most of the images in the text show pathological photographs at the gross or micro level. Some good process diagrams. Also included are some epidemiological facts. I would like to see a companion website for the text and more discussion on treatments for listed diseases.

Awesome reference for ESL teaching!

I recently purchased this book as a quick reference for my ESL classes and have found it to be TREMENDOUSLY helpful! I bought a stack of books to help me teach the course, but this one has been used the most by far! In a pinch, I can easily teach an entire lesson using the very well-organized sections, ranging from Spelling to Verbs/Tenses to Prepositions and beyond! In the end, I decided to buy a copy for each of my students, as they have found it to be an easy-to-use reference. There are a few points made by Collins with which I don't agree (i.e., in his chapter on Modals he states that one would typically only use "can I?" not "may I?" when asking permisson), but aside from these few points, I LOVE this book--in less than a week of use, it has earned a permanent place on my desk!

The author has admirably condensed decades of his experience with teaching English (and teaching teachers of English) into an easy-to-use guide that explains the commonest errors, why they're wrong, and how to correct them. What really shines through on every page is Dr. Collins' empathy for and patience with speakers of other languages: his explanations are straightforward and uncluttered: he just wants the reader to understand what the problem is and how to correct it. I recommend this book to any learner of English who wants to "go native," speaking and writing as if English were your first language.

I will probably return it. It would've been great if I had bought it in my first year learning English. I couldn't find many mistakes that unconsciously I know that I make.
The errors that this book corrects is for who just started studying English or for people that don't have much contact with the language (students that don't live in an English speaking country)

And into an erotic, naked adventure which sees her streaking through parking lots, being chased and photographed, even receiving a spanking! Will her ordeal ever end? Or will the police finally catch up to her and take her in, naked and in handcuffs?

A fun flashing fantasy

What makes this story so enjoyable is its believability. College students really do play beer pong, and really fun college girls may actually play strip beer pong. A young woman could run out naked in a panic, and should could run into weirdos who hinder rather than help her get to safety. Moral of the story, keep your clothes on at parties you may have to leave suddenly.
